Schalk can take contact
February 14, 2013, 16:18:30

Ex Supersport

Schalk Burger is worried about his conditioning after missing a crucial stage of the build-up to his Super Rugby comeback, but he says taking contact is not a particular concern to him.

The Springbok flank and Stormers captain was bracing himself for a busy finish to this week as he goes out to prove his readiness for a return to the field in next week’s Super Rugby opener against the Bulls at Loftus (Friday 22 February, 7:10pm).

He agrees that playing the Bulls will be a tough ask as his first game back since injuring himself against the Hurricanes at the start of the last Super Rugby season 12 months ago.

Obviously it is a bit of a worry and it is not ideal as I would like to have had some game-time behind me before playing against the Bulls,” said Burger.

At least I don’t have a serious injury at the moment. I have had a grade-one calf strain that has kept me out the last two weeks which was frustrating as it means I have lost out on an important part of my conditioning. So I am a bit off, conditioning wise. But at least my knee is fine. It will just add to my pre-match nerves. Instead of relaxing with a coke and water before the game maybe now I will have to drink a Red Bull.”

However the physical aspect of the big north/south derby, something that would scare many who have not played for a while, does not appear to concern Burger too much.

I will obviously take a bit of contact next week in the build-up but right now conditioning is what I am concentrating on. I have three tough days ahead of me getting my conditioning right,” he said.

Contact is the least of my worries. I did take contact earlier in the build-up, before my calf injury, so that’s not a barrier that still needs to be got through. I am confident I can take the hits. I just need to be fit enough to play 80 minutes. When you guys come to training next Tuesday you will hopefully see me getting stuck in.”

Burger still doesn’t sound 100% certain that he will be ready to play at Loftus. Talking to the media on Wednesday, he kept using the word “if” when talking about his contribution to the Pretoria clash.

However there can be no denying that he is eager to get going after a frustrating year on the sidelines.

I am keen to play anywhere in the loose trio, I just want to get going and get out there and have some fun,” said the Stormers captain.

Western Province’s victory in the Currie Cup last year has also not diminished his hunger to do well for the Stormers. If anything, he feels it may have intensified it.

Andries (Bekker), Jean (de Villiers) and myself have been in the Cape for a long time and we haven’t actually won a trophy yet. So we are determined to do that. It did feel a bit like we had won a trophy as we joined in the celebrations after the Currie Cup win, but we never played.

“Look, the big toffee these days when it comes to trophies is obviously Super Rugby and we know that will take some doing. We’ve come close in the last few seasons without quite getting there and we want to get that right this year. We are working hard towards achieving that objective.”

The Stormers face a tough start, with the Bulls match being followed by a trip to Durban to face the Sharks and then the first home game the following week is against the champion team, the Chiefs, who finished second to the Stormers on the overall log last year without the two sides having played each other.

Burger agrees that it could hardly be tougher as starts to the competitive season go, but he’s looking at it philosophically.

“We know that we are in a situation where if we don’t play well we could conceivably be played three and lost three as all those opponents are really tough, but that is the start we have and there is nothing we can do to change that. We’ve actually had a look at it and we’ve decided that we would rather play them now than in the last three games.

“We will try to improve with every game. Last year we were good defensively, but our attack was perhaps not up to par, and we want to try and get that right.

"The key though is not to look too far ahead. We know we have three tough games to start with and at this stage we are not looking further than that.

"We’ve got to get through these three games and the season is just so long now that you have to break it into pieces and not look too far ahead.”

Quite encouraging that Schalk is not concerned about his knee. Give him 40 odd minutes against the bulle. Pity we will be without Eben and Tiaan. But still enough to beat bulle away.

Go The Mighty Stormers!

I dont find anything I hear about Schalk reassuring. But then he did come back from a broken neck, and I have to admit, I thought he was toast at that point.

Moz he is a rare guy this. You probably didnt see the ad on TV but when he was kid his father recounts a story where schalk was in a cycle race as a kid. He took a fall and wrecked the bike. He then picked up the bike and ran the rest of the way and came 3rd I think it was.

Huge guts and determination and incredible stamina. But I do realise he still has to prove himself - lest ou Mike gets on my case!  However he is not your run of the mill player.

Amazing thing about Schalk for me has always been....even though he is not particularly fast....if there's a try in the corner, Schalk is always in frame.

i dont find anything reassuring about his injury either with this article. IMO burger needs to worry about wether he cant take the field before he starts talking about taking contact.

as for the bycycle race story, so hes a cheat, i mean its a bycycle race, not a pick up ur bike and run race, pfffffft, i wonder what else he has done in his career that didnt comply with the rules of the game.
2009 springs to mind with that eye gouge, possible roid rage??? o_O, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm O_o

How about an Umaga/Mealamu spear tackle on Brian O' Driscoll.....now you are down significantly. Having your 13 take out the Lions 13 and captain at the start of the first test.....just not done!

@moz,
down yes, down siginificantly,,,,,errr no. IMO eye gouges are probably the worst acts in rugby, but each to their own.
anyway, i will call ur spear and cheap shot as i match it with a greyling forearm, :o)

Well how about a Bakkies reverse head butt....I know it's our guy but it was high on artistic merit.  Still maybe you would prefer Ricard Loe almost taking Horan's head off and breaking another Wallabies nose?

Burger needs to be smart and it is time for him to look out for himself - maybe get a cushy overseas assignment before his body completely gives in. Get something for himself after putting everything on the line for so many years.

He's served his country and his province with distinction

@moz,
LMFAO, :oD artistic merit??? that comment had me in stiches, but even though that comment is funny as fudge, im not letting u claim that one, lolz. "oP

ol richard loe, my leasty favourite All Black ever, or at least tied with simon mannix, who after one test against france was the most hated man in the country for being so shit, lolz.

that wallbyies players nose was ol paul carozza, i was a young un when that happened and even i thought that was a bit mental, he drove my dad wild but he was really anti foul play, so loe got on his nerves alot.

but i will take my botha head butt chips and see ur richard loe hihgtackle and broken nose and raise u a botha elbow on waugh, :o)

errr do u have any chips that dont date back more then 5 years??? tehehehehehe, :oP

Well I'm a pretty ancient codger Sasu, so my next one has to be Kevin Skinner. Having been outscrummed in the second test in 1956 you guys brought in a better boxer than Sonny Bill to first knock out our tighthead and then knock out our loosehead. Admittedly Jaap Bekker responded by trampling Tiny White, but he was probably concussed anyway.

i do know of that incident, but i heard it from the kiwi perspective which as u can imagine paints a different picture. i prefer to comment on the things that i have seen, :o)

i do love that kiwi attitude though, if u cant beat them, send in somebody who can, LMAO, :oD

and no moz, that doesnt mean u should replace greyling with francois botha, :oP

Well Sasu there's a long history of nefarious incidents from both sides I'm guessing. But we'll always believe you buggers are dirtier....and you'll erroneously believe the same thing.
