Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius has shot and killed his girlfriend, South African media are reporting.

Afrikaans-language newspaper Beeld is reporting he mistook the woman, his girlfriend of a year, for a burglar to his Pretoria home.

Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was understood to have shot his girlfriend in the head and arm, although the circumstances surrounding the incident were unclear.

Beeld said Pistorius had been arrested, and was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman told Reuters that a woman had been found dead at the house but declined to give any more details.

Pistorius, who races wearing carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400 semi-finals in London 2012.

South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime and some home-owners carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.

sad time for the paralymic legend and his grilfriends family, my commiserations and prayers for all involved.

This is a very sad story. If it is true that he shot his girlfriend thinking she was a burglar, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, then he must be absolutely devistated! My heart goes out to her family and friends. This is just another symptom of the rampant crime that South Africans have to live with every day. Very very sad!

Very sad indeed if it is the truth. Reports change every now and then, latest one states that she has been shot 4 times.

Very sad and very strange. Why in a high security home would you shoot at someone unless you were defending yourself?

What a truly ghastly event and condolences to all concerned.  How devastated Oscar must be!!!!

Yes saSUE  there are huge problems regarding violence in the country - amongst other things.

It seems  family members and friends are most often the victims of guns kept for protection. Professional security firms on domestic duty advise against their men being armed with guns....for exactly the reason as may have been the case here, mistaken identity.

But if it wasn't that, we have an even bigger tragedy unfolding. This man was received like a god in the Olympic Stadium. And his life is a role model up to this point.

Police are saying that any rumours about an accidental shooting due to mistaken identity didn't come from them and they have confirmed that there have been previous "incidents of a domestic nature" involving Pistorius and the victim Reeva Steenkamp.

Police have also confirmed that Pistorius is spending tonight in jail and they will be opposing any bail application when he appears in court. Not sounding good for Oscar.

This was the top story on American News Broadcasts this morning. I saw the interview with a woman who was the officer dealing with the press,  confirming they were not the source of the"mistaken identity" rumours. I'm not suprised he isn't being released. He has to be a danger to himself at this point.

SOUTH AFRICAN Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed his model girlfriend.

Local media initially reported that the 26-year-old mistook Reeva Steenkamp for  an intruder inside his Pretoria home. South African police said they were unaware of this.

A police spokeswoman said there had been previous incidents at the address, describing them as ‘‘allegations of a domestic nature’’. She said neighbours had been questioned over reports of an argument heard earlier in the night.

The swimsuit-model and law graduate was shot four times, including in the head and arm, and died at the scene at 4am Thursday local time.

Pistorius, wearing a hooded top pulled over his face, was  taken to the local police station to be charged. 

He was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court later on Thursday.

Police in South Africa do not name suspects in crimes until they have appeared in court but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said that Pistorius was at his home after the death of Steenkamp and "there is no other suspect involved".

The couple had been dating since last November and Ms Steenkamp’s publicist, Sarit Tomlinson, they had a ‘‘healthy, fabulous relationship’’.

The model was due to star in a celebrity edition of a South African reality television show which was scheduled to start on the weekend.

‘‘She was the kindest most unbelievable girl,’’ she said. ‘‘At the moment it’s just shocking. No one knows what happened ... she was a rising star.’’

Less than a day before the shooting, Miss Steenkamp tweeted:  ‘‘What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay’’.

Pistorius lives in the Silver Wood Estate complex, in Pretoria’s east, a gated community that markets itself as a ‘‘new prestigious security estate’’ with 24-hour security.

The gold medallist, who races wearing carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400 metres semi-finals in London.

He has been a trailblazer for disabled athletes, and was hailed as an inspiration by many of the able-bodied athletes during the London Games. Pistorius went on to carry the flag for South Africa in the closing ceremony.

Pistorius has won eight Paralympic medals across three Olympics, comprising six gold, one silver and one bronze. He won two Paralympic golds and a silver in London.

His first race for 2013 was due to take place in Australia. He was scheduled to arrive in Sydney on March 6 and  compete in able-bodied 400m events in Sydney on March 9 and Perth on March 16.

 Very sad state of affairs. Fame and fortune do not bring with them happiness and contentment.

I dated a girl (albeit not a very long time) that lived in the Silverlakes estate in PTA. I went to meet the parents one weekend before she moved to Durban and it was like a little country outside of SA. Heavily gated with security manning each gate. It is a community on a golf course and it felt and looked like a place not normally associated with SA. There is no way he mistook her for an intruder. Oscar went on to date my ex girlfriend and that lasted a very short time due to his temper. I still keep in touch with her which is how I know this. The news reports suggest his little temper still gets the better of him and neighbours confirm he and his girlfriend were very commonly involved in domestics. Police say his address is known to them for the same reasons and they have been there numerous times to settle domestic disputes.

Shot 4 times?? No man...The police spokeswomen has squashed rumours that it was a mistaken identity affair..

What will happen here is he will get a top notch lawyer and the charge will be reduced from murder to manslaughter and he will end up getting off scott free. Money can buy you anything in SA.. Even freedom!!

I posted on here something like "Oscar blows it all" after his unsportsmanlike reaction to losing to the Brazilian in London. If you listened to that diatribe and his father's over the top fawning over his son....one could have deduced that this chap was in the centre of his own universe.

Sadly that may have served him poorly. But the sympathy should go to the young lady. What a sad way for an attractive young woman to exit our stage.

This is really sad - i don't know what happened - but I believe it will become clearer tomorrow.   I do not know what came about - but about a year ago a case was repotred to the Police about domestic violence in the Pistorius residence - but subsequently withdrawn by the complainant.   There was a newspaper report on the issue - but the name of the complainant was not provided.

One wonders if there is not some emotional and pshycological problems involvd here.

On June 25, 2007, police entered Benoit's home on a "welfare check" after several missed appointments, leading to concerns. The officers discovered the bodies of Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel at around 2:30 p.m. EDT. Upon investigating, no additional suspects were sought by authorities. It was determined that Benoit had committed the murders.

Over a three-day period, Benoit had killed his wife and son before he hanged himself. His wife was bound before the killing. Benoit's son was drugged and likely unconscious before Benoit strangled him. Benoit then committed suicide with a weight machine.

Toxicology reports released on July 17, 2007 revealed that at their time of death, Nancy had three different drugs in her system: Xanax, hydrocodone, andhydromorphone, all of which were found at the therapeutic rather than toxic levels. Daniel was found to have Xanax in his system, which led the chief medical examiner to believe that he was sedated before he was murdered. Benoit was found to have Xanax, hydrocodone, and an elevated level of testosterone, caused by a synthetic form of the hormone, in his system. The chief medical examiner attributed the testosterone level to Benoit possibly being treated for a deficiency caused by previous steroid abuse or testicular insufficiency. Apparently it was not "roid-rage" involved?????? Prior to the murder–suicide, Benoit had been given illegal steroids not in compliance with WWE's Talent Wellness Program in February 2006. Benoit received nandrolone and anastrozole. During the investigation into steroid abuse, it was revealed that other wrestlers had also been given steroids.

We would all have different theories. Mine is that Pistorius is a whinger. I did not know about his dad and him blowing up so badly after the Brazilian beat him (thanks Moz) so that just further enhances my thoughts on this little prick. If he cant get what he wants, he kicks and screams.

I summise that he is so used to being a "playboy" and screwing chicks around that he finally met his match. He met a girl who didn't feed off his fame as she had enough of her own. She could be as much a "playgirl" as he could a "playboy" and she beat him at his own game and he didn't know how to deal with this as all his life, he has lived in "his own world!" He probably thought, if I cant have her, no one will. Rumours are that they had a fight early evening and she left. She returned at 3am. Maybe she left to go out about town with the girls and when she came home, maybe slightly tipsy, they got involved in an argument that reached fever pitch voice levels (hence neighbours awaking)  and he couldn't control himself. For this that have been into Silver Lakes (not sure why the papers call it silver woods) will know that the properties are all pretty close and its very quiet from the usual urban areas. No people walking the streets as it is a gated community. Its like a pleasantville community where every house just reeks of millions and its picturesque and calm. Any loud noises at night (even voices) would be a major shock and wake people up.

 BL for the record it was Oscar and his team that made the cheating accusations against the Brazilian lad. His father was just way over the top on Oscar's accomplishments.

It has to be a nightmare for him, poor guy.

I dont share your feelings of remorse for him to tell you the truth Moz. I believe he is a cold blooded murderer who took the life of an innocent women and he must have his freedom taken away from him.

I may be wrong and the man deserves a fair trial but my belief is he knew exactly who walked through that door. Too many signs point to that conclusion. If he infact did argue with the deceased before shots were fired as witnesses have said then he knew exactly who it was. How do you get so many (4) shots so perfectly aimed in kill zones on a human being if you are shooting from around a corner as you would be if an intruder were in your home.

Its hard for me to feel anything but anger and hate for this oke...

Actually I was sympathising with the father. His whole world just exploded. Unless everybody has this whole thing wrong, Oscar has forfeited our sympathies.
