Time to block overseas players from representing the boks again
February 04, 2013, 14:42:56

With all the recent signings, especially the young players is it not time to block any player not in SA from playing for the boks. Meyers insistence on chosing a host of hasbeens playing overseas for the boks, when younger talent was available with sa appears to be encouraging players to leave the country.

Am in 100% agreement with you on this one.   Meyer's picks for the EOYT was a disgrace.   I think he probably had a problem in the case of Louw and Pienaar - but I think we can ride the storm and leave them out in future.   I shiver to think what could happen to players like Serfontein, Jordaan  and Swiel if they are treated the same way as Stander was.   Put them on the bench for the Springboks against the weak sides they are playing in June - and an incentive to recruit them will be less - since they would not qualify for future international selection.

We are losing far too many international potential players at present..    Let the has beens go and let them stay overseas to earn ample pension money - but keep the younger talented player here - or our rugby will be detrimentally affected.

The lesser players can only get contracts with lesser teams in Europe.   Do you think and reasonable European side will sign "Springboks" like Jantjies and De Jongh - not on your life they would not.

We were lucky inasmuch as both Goosen and Lambie played for the Springboks already - otherwise they would also have been sigbed up already.   Etzebeth ruled out any signing for the next three years and is unlikely to ever go and play in Europe before the age of 30.

Hey Sharkbok, this mass exodus of SA players leaving our shores is only going to get worse, seriously.  I don't think HM is willing to do his work in finding young players that are already available right at his door step.

I don't think players who leaves SA shores should be given the nod ahead of those who are already available at home.  AB and the OZs have a better system than we have, any player that leaves their country doesn't get selected.  SA has become extremely lenient in that respect.

Having said that, this is a very short career for these guys, they need to make money while they can.   I think Habana could be forgiven for joining Racing Metro at the end of the season, he's done a lot for his Club and his country, and that is a timely move for him at this stage to cash in.

Fair play To Etzebeth, that's the real Springbok embassador, Mtawarira was asked by one of the NH media in relation to his future, i.e. did he consider a move to the NH for a defferent challenge, and e plainly told them that this wasn't going to happen until he's nearly finished.  That's the kind of loyaly we need from our great players.

Ireland: Jonny Sexton has been criticised by the Irish media for joining Racing Metro at the end of this season, has been branded as shalow as opposed to loyal to his local team as well as the Irish squad.   IRFU are doing all they can to stop any of that from happening.

I' not sure if SARU are doing all they can to stop potential Bok or SA players from leaving our shores

Louw was our star player in the final tests or i should say was one of them. It would be a mistake to not select a guy based on the country he plays in. Players should be picked on form , when he pulls on a Green jersey he represents south africa.

people are entitled to travel to look for work, that does not make them less South African.

Goodman it does not make them less South African, but if we keep losing quality young players it is going to make our SuperXV teams weaker. CJ Stander has left to Ireland as has that young lock from the Stormers who only a year ago was rated better than Ezbeth. Rynhard Elstadt has been rummoured to be leaving to play in France, and the other looseforward from the Stormers has just left to play in Bath with Louw.

Also what would happen if Serfontein and Sweil got Irish or Scotish residency and got capped to play for Scotland. It would make the boks up coming players pool weaker. We can handle this to some extent in certain positions like looseforward, but not flyhalf or centers

Louw could be an exception, as their was not that many quality specialist 6 flankers around and the boks were in a crisis.

As a Sharks fan would you say that a Player like Ryan Kankowski who plays part of the year in Japan is not open to Bok rights ? and how is it different if a player is a specialist ? Boks were in Crisis ? how so ?
