foxsport fantasy rough guide/tactics for newbies,,,:o)
February 03, 2013, 18:35:05

hey guys, just wanted to post my team for the sarugby.com foxsport fantasy league and also to hopefully get a few more recrutis.
we currently have 4 players i think in it so far and the more people that join the merrier it is IMO, and im sure a bit of merriness would go along way in these waters, lolz.
here is the link to that site,,,
superrugbyfantasy.foxsports.com.au/

and here is the code to the sarugby.com league once u have registered, 3671-4183

but for the bennefit of a few new folks to the fantasy league and also to anyone thinking of joining, i have named my team below and the reserves and my line of thinking for the tactics that goes with them.

first round is an all OZ darby with the rebels taking on the force and the reds vs the brumbies. round 2 will only have 6 trnasfers, so u will need to pick ur team knowing that u can only transfer a maximum of 6 players in the next round, unless u use ur one season wildcard pass which gives u unlimited transfers for one round only.

anyway heres my team,,,

spXV Hokage XV,,,
FR - ben alexander (brumbies), pek cowan (force), (R) ben afeaki (chiefs)
HK - stephen moore (brumbies), (R) banadise maku (kings)
SR - james horwill (reds), hugh pile (rebels), (R) brodie retallick (cheifs)
LF - david pocock (brumbies), chris alcock (force), gareth delve(rebels), (R) daniel adongo (kings)
HB - richardr kingi (rebels), (R) demitri catrakilis (kings)
FH - christain leilafano (brumbies), (R) chris noakes (blues)
CT - micheal harris (reds), james oconner (rebels), (R) paul jordaan (sharks)
OB - digby ioane (reds), sam norton knight (force), henry speight (brumbies), (R) andrew horrel (chiefs)

the guys in the starting XV obviosuly speak for themselves, they are the best IMO with the money available and given that my bench has been selected for the next round.
this is important to note, cos most of the time ur bench is there to cover any last minute changes to a teams line up if done after the transfer timeline closes. the system will automatically make the sub for any player on ur bench who is playing.

i picked bandise maku cos i ahve no intention of changing stephen moore as my hooker unless he gets injured, ideally i would rather have the cheetahs, but i can wait until other areas have been better sorted to the team i want.

daniel adongo is currently in my team and i will prob play him in rnd 2 and sub out gareth delve for marcel coetzee with one of my transfers.

goal kickers get extra points with conversions and penalty goals, so demetri catrkillis will be subbed on next week as he is in the halfback slots. ideally i would rather have hougaard, but transfers is an issue.
also keep in mind that the kings are playing the force in round 2 and that is the 2nd easiest team in the comp, so tyhe kings best chance of winning any game will be this one, hence my adongo and catrkilis selections who both shone in the ITM and CC.

i will transfer micheal harris out next wek too and put in jordaan from the bench in rnd 2, sharks are playing the cheetahs so im expecting the sharks to rip them a new one.
want to put in folau who is regarded in this format as a center too.

most my transfers next week though will hit the outside backs, and i will be looking to add in some new faces.

hope this helps the newbies in any way and i also hope more players join.

any questions feel free to ask, i have no life so im usually roaming these forum corridors, :o)

BTW my team is subject to change, and i will for the first few weeks be posting my team before the game starts.

I went the other way and picked a limited number of players from the franchises playing in Round 1 and tried to concentrate on platyrs that I believe will go through to my seond round selections.    There is one question though - if you put players on the bench - and the following week you want to take them to the main team - is that regarded as one of the six transfers you are allowed after each round?  I for instance would want to transfer them to my team and replace them on the bench with other players.   Thatwould mean I would be transferring out six players from the present team and bring in six new players to fill the vacncies on the bench or even in the team.

A further question - I wrote to you elsewhere that there are some name changes required on the list of players.  How can that be updated?  The misisng players are really Jaco Taute (full back) , Damian de Allende (center) and Jan Serfortein (cente).  I am keen to put Serfontein in especially - sine I hink he will be the strating center for the Bulls at 12 - but his name is nowhere to be found.   Danie Poolman is not on the Stormers squad this year - he departed for Europe.

I have problems with the Round 1 issue.  Initially I posted a virtually full list of Australian players - but then realized that most of them would not be going forward to Round 2.   I then changed my selection for Round 1 to cater for those players with a relaistic chance to go on being inh my selections and picjed some players for New Zealand and South Africa to fill the remaining vacncies in both the team and on the bench.    Wil put my selections on site on the Thursday before Round 1.

I will have to think really hard about O'Connor - I badly want him in the team - but he is bloody expeensive and will upset my budget completely.  Maybe I should really look at your selections, my present ones and try and find another way out of that probblem.

You can guess - but I did not put Retallick in my squad - I picked Etzebeth.   I wnbted to put in Marcel  Coetzee - but he also is very expensive this year.   They should have increased the amount from $6 000 000 to $7 000 000.  They are pricing some players out of affordability if a person wants to have balamced selections..

@mikey,

if you put players on the bench - and the following week you want to take them to the main team - is that regarded as one of the six transfers you are allowed after each round?

no its not, players on ur bench earn u no points during the games, but u cans select them to cover for any unforseen injuries and last minute slections.
so effectively, u will have 6 transfers for rnd 2, plus the players on ur bench to chop and change ur team with.

I wrote to you elsewhere that there are some name changes required on the list of players.  How can that be updated?

foxsport will update the roster once the teams have been announced and if the missed someone like they did taute, thats if they havent updated it already,

I have problems with the Round 1 issue.  Initially I posted a virtually full list of Australian players - but then realized that most of them would not be going forard to Round 2. I then changed my selection for Round 1 to cater for those players with a relaistic chance to go on being inh my selections
i can really understand where ur coming from, in the 2011 fantasy league, i refused to pick any aussies in my team, mainly due to protesting the sanctiond match fixing which aided the reds finals and championship run, lolz.
i must stress though that i think ur tactic is flawed and i would even use my wildcard in rnd2, before i do what ur planning, cos u can lose some serious points and be trailing for the rest of the league,
then again this all austalian girls rugby team in rind 1 is unprecedented, so ur tactic could actully work.
personally im going to bite the bullet for the first 2 rounds or so and pick players accordingly, even if i am stuck with one or two players i normally wouldnt pick the first few rounds.

I will have to think eally hard about O;Connor - I badly want him in the team - but he is bloody expeensive and will upset my budget completely.  Maybe I should really look at your selections, my present ones and try and find another way out of that probblem.
its why most my bench players are very cheap, so the stars who are normally expensive will get first crack in the starting team and if worst comes to worst i will pick the guys of the bench for when i have no choice.
i have bandise as a nice example. he is likely to start for the kings, is realtively cheap, but will only go in my team if something happens to stephen moore.
FYI, once my slections are sorted, i will prob roll with adriaan strauss like i have the last few years.
ezebeth and retallick are my normal incumbent 2nd rowers, but retallick gets prefernce in case my 6 picks cant accomodate for ezebeth, thats more a flavour of choice thing though and the fact retallick was 4th for most tackles made in the spXV and each tackle is worth a point.

Sasue

We can only finalize selections once the teams have been announced.  Can you living in Australia post the four teams on this site as soon as the announcmeent have been made.- we may get it a bit later only.

@mikey,

no problems mike. heads up though, some teams are real pricks when it comes to naming their teams, especially the highlanders who on anumber of occassions last year posted their team after the deadline, as they normally didnt play by 5.30pm OZ time.
will do my best to keep u all posted though, :o)

Why are you worried about your budget Sasu? I have enough for an all star team and a bench, what are you reserving your money for? :S

 @shezza,

I only have about $120,000 left, o,O

Players i want in the team even on the bench cost too much, thats including the price of the player being replaced plus.

I am interested in ur team though,,,,,very interested, :o)

 @Sasuke, Is it possibale to change the team?

I was still getting used to the system and I made the transfers.

It now says that I have to wait till after the 1st round to make more transfers.

It is hard choosing a team, because their is not enough money to choose a good squad.

My team is looking like the strength of the Southern Kings

 @shezza,

The time it took u to post all ur comments today is really all the time it takes to update/transfer ur teams each week, plus it adds a bit of spice to ur spXV viewing.

u also get to know the players u select intimately on a performance level, lolz.

But all good bro, no pressure. im hounding as many folks as i can, LMAO, :oP

@sharkbok,

Bro u are able to make as many changes as u want until that timer in the right hand corner reaches zero, which is 5mins before kick off of the first spXV game of the round. click on transfers & when it reloads click the icon that looks like a play button (white triangle inside black circle and pick to ur hearts content.

 important tip to note,,,

after the first round, make ur transfers as close to the cut off time as possible.

once u "confirm" ur selections, u wont be able to change them. u will only be able to move players from ur bench into the starting XV and vice versa.

I will post announced teams ASAP once they have been released.

Sasue

Despite what I wrote earlier - I did juggle around some players and got to the following selections:-

FR - Ben Alexander, Greg Holmes, Frans Malherbe

HK -  James Henson. Shotakie Horie

SR - Hugh Pyke. James Horwill, Eben Etebeth

LF - David Pocock, Gareth Delve, Rynhardt Elstadt

HB - Will Genia, Ian prior

FH - Quade Cooper, Johan Goosen

CT - James O'Conner, Winston Stanley, Paul Jordaan

OB - Cooper Vuna, Nick Cummins, James Hogg, Jurgen Visser

I had a serious fiddling problem - especially since some players are bloody expensive.   On the low cost players side I had to look at SA players that are low cost with a real shance to make the starting line-ups.   Would have liked to put in Cane, and some new Zealand players - but they would destroy my budget.   The bench are largely made up of cheap SA players - would have liked to see Serfonetien around as well - but he is not on the Foxsport list as yet.    The Aussie players with rare exceptions will be phased out and the final selections will be based on the teams to be announced.

In view of costs - etc, my final selection at flyhalf is bound to be Goosen and Lambie. - so out goes Cooper and the overpriced New Zealanders..

@mikey,

friendly suggestion there bro in regards to flyhalves. lambie is 325k and goosen is 300k. if u have both in ur team, one will definately be on the bench, which IMO is a bit of a waste of money.
the pros of having two qaulity fyhalves like that in ur team is that u wont waste a selection on flyhalves as u have one star on the bench ready to go and if u have any last miute changes to either the sharks or cheetahs, u will have one or the other on the bench ready to go.
but those secanrios are improbable. better to get a cheap suitable flyhalf like sias ebherson who is worth 235k leaviing u an extra 65k or 90k (depending on who u replace) to ehlp strengthen ur team elsehwere.

nothing wrong with ur tactics at all BTW, but not something that i would do personally.

 I have noticed that many of the South African backs are cheap, whilst our forwards are expensive.

The new Sharks scrumhalf Renalht is dirt cheap, but I suppose he has not played SuperXV yet. -

@Sasuke- how is the rating done, and what is the purpose/win the game?

Is it done on quantitative stats like ESPN, along with subjective evaluations?

@sharkbok,

how is the rating done, and what is the purpose/win the game?
sorry if i misunderstood the question, the purpose is to win which is done by gaining more points then the others in the league u are partcipating with.
sidenote - foxsport also automatically puts in other pools. for example cos i support the hurricanes and live in melbourne victoria, i am in a pool which competes with every other player who picked the hurricanes as their team they support and i am also in the victoria pool for everyone competing and living in melbourne.
there is also a global one which everyone automatically goes in.
also if u should get the most points after the rounds have been confirmed, u will win 10,000 rand. if u top the global league all together, u will win 100,000 rand.

Is it done on quantitative stats like ESPN, along with subjective evaluations?
here are how foxsport score their points.

Action Points
Playing 1 - 60 minutes 1
Props that play more than 60 minutes 4
Hookers, locks and backrowers that play more than 61 minutes 3
All other positions playing more than 61 minutes 2

For each try scored by a lock or backrower 12
For each try scored by a scrum-half, fly-half, centre or outside back 10
For each try assist 5

For each conversion 2
For each conversion miss -1
For each penalty goal 3
For each penalty miss -1
For each drop goal 3
For each drop goal miss -1
Yellow card -5
Red card -15
For each run 1
For each tackle bust 2
For each offload 1
For each linebreak 5
For each linebreak creates 3
For each error -3
For each tackle made by a prop or hooker 2
For each tackle made by all other positions 1
For each tackle miss -2
For each lineout take on own throw 1

Sasue

Thanks for the tip about the flyhalf issue - I will look at potential flyhalfs that would come off the bench rather than starting line-up ones to put on the bench.   Nowever, my cimments were more needling than anything else.  LOL

In view of the probable departure of Elsadt for France - I changed his name to that of Ryan Kankowski.

Just one question - I assume that if you have players on the bench and they are brought on later in the game - they would earn points on the same basis as the players that they replace do.

Just one note - your choice of Retallick (the spear tackler)  is really problematic considering the potential red card or even yellow one - as well as penalties conceded and line-out problems he has.  LOL

@mikey,

LMAO, u carck me up with ur retallick needling, but i love standing up for him, especially when the numbers are on my side, :o)
u will be shocked to hear how good retallick really is, last year in the spXV retllick was,,,
4th in the comp for most tackles made and leading tackler for a tight 5 forward,
stole more opposition lineouts than anyone else
9th for pick and drives
7th for lineout takes
ezebeth wasnt in the top 10 for any of those. i will throw u a bone though, retallick was the 8th most penalised player in the spXV, LMAO, :oP

but this post wasnt about that, i just wanted to give u a heads up. cooper vuna is missing the first 6 weeks of rugby, hamstring i think, cant remember at the moment, :o)
