Whitelock to lead crusaders

E Keo

George Whitelock will skipper the Crusaders in their warm-up game against the Hurricanes in Timaru.

Richie McCaw is on a six-month sabbatical, and prominent All Blacks such as Kieran Read, Dan Carter and Israel Dagg will only be introduced in the next couple of weeks.

Whitelock leads a team that includes a number of new faces, with Joe Moody, Codie Taylor, Dominic Bird, Shane Christie, Jordan Taufua, Jeremy Su’a and Kieran Fonotia all set to get their first run for the Canterbury franchise.

Crusaders – 15 Tom Marshall, 14 James Schrader, 13 Kieran Fonotia, 12 Robbie Fruean, 11 Shayne Anderson, 10 Tyler Bleyendaal, 9 Jeremy Su’a, 8 Jordan Taufua, 7 Shane Christie, 6 George Whitelock (c), 5 Joel Everson, 4 Dominic Bird, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Joe Moody.
Subs: Paea Fa’anunu, Adrian Barone, Mitch Graham, Ben Funnell, Jimmy Tupou, Matt Simons, Luke Whitelock, Matt Todd, Andy Ellis, Tyrone Elkington, Kolio Hifo, Stephen Burt

Wonder how the  crusties will go this season and how good the newbies are. Problems for the fantasy rugby oaks. One can only really get a picture after a couple of rounds.

It looks like the Blues have also got a lot of newcomers (ex Planet Rugby):

The Blues' young newcomers will get the chance to test themselves against a powerful Reds outfit when the two sides meet for their first pre-season trial of the year in Toowoomba on Saturday.

While the Blues will take a 27-man squad featuring 18 uncapped players across the Tasman, they'll come up against a Reds side boasting 11 capped Wallabies from 2012.

Blues head coach Sir John Kirwan said it would be a great challenge for his young team and he was looking forward to seeing them express themselves.

"They're all ready to go, they've been training really hard and now it's time to play," Kirwan said.

"We've left some of the more experienced guys at home, we know what they can do so it's a chance for the young boys to have a go." (Exactly right - please note Alistair!!)

Luke Braid will captain the side in the absence of Ali Williams, who alongside fellow All Blacks Piri Weepu and Charlie Faumuina, will not travel to Queensland.

Anthony Boric, Rene Ranger, Charles Piutau, Culum Retallick and George Moala will also remain at home.

The starting XV features nine players who have yet to pull on a Blues jersey including the entire backline, while nine reserves are also new to the franchise.

Blues: 15 Marty McKenzie, 14 Waisake Naholo, 13 Malakai Fekitoa, 12 Jackson Willison, 11 Frank Halai, 10 Baden Kerr, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Peter Saili, 7 Luke Braid (c), 6 Kane Barrett, 5 Ronald Raymakers, 4 Liaki Moli, 3 Angus Ta'avao, 2 James Parsons, 1 Tom McCartney.
Replacements (from): Albert Nikoro, Lolagi Visinia, Pita Ahki, Francis Saili, Jamison Gibson-Park, Joe Edwards, Sean Polwart, Brendon O'Connor, Steven Luatua, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Tim Perry, Quentin MacDonald

Seems some renewal is happening in nz. We shall see how it goes.

Would like to see what happens in the game between the Hurricanes and th Crusders as well as the other warm up games.   My guess is that the Hurricans are going to give the Crusaders a rugby lession - that the Chiefs will beat he Highland Geriatrics and that the Reds will cut the Blues down to size.

Beeno the fantasy selections are not all that difficult - you know there are at least four Shark players - three Stormer players and one Cheetah player in the mix - out of the 23 players you may select - So the other 15 can come from the other 12 franchises.  I have already lined up the said 8 players as top performers and will make sure they get into position asap - that is after the first round.

And there are also high-priced SA players that I have already ruled out completely.   So nice game coming up

Mike I must look and see what DSTV are screening. Hurricanes and crusties worth a look. Chiefies may not beat the Highlanders -were some  folk saying highlanders are going to be a force? One can only start making some sort of assessments after a couple of rounds.

Can you select your 23 from anywhere?  I take it your selections are secret. If rooitwit showed his selections re his "lightbringers" one could know who not to select! Hahahahahaha  - but I must be careful ou rooitwit takes this fantasy rugby stuff extremely seriously.

Beeno

I took the 15 players from the four clubs playing on Saturday and had to cut out some really good choices because they were too expensive.

The other 8 I am not going to get any points for in Round 1  - since I took a few top SA and New Zealand players to transfer to the team the week after the first round and allow for some peformers from the other teams to play in the second week to come on line.    My bench include amongst others Dagg, Etzebeth and since I had to cut costs - also Jordaan.   The latter is one of the cheap players that could score good points in the compeition.    However, I am sure that players like Dagg and Etzebeth will be on virtually every list - so I do not really give away any secrets.,

@mikey,

thats ok bro, bench players never give u points anyway, unless theyve changed that rule for the 2013 season, which i dont think they have but will double check on and let u know.

also just a heads up, but the crusaders have a bye in rnd2, so its a waste of time putting any crusaders on the bench for for rnd 1.

maybe u should reconsider and sign up, as u are the blogger her with the most posts, i and im sure others would love to have u on board, :o),
just picture this at the end of a grueling spXV, u come out on top, then u will have an some official bragging rights, instead of that slef proclaimed rugby guru status that u claim to have, but not one person has seen, o_o

anyway, i just hope i dont hear during the spXV tales from u saying that if u were playing, u would be teaching the folks a lesson, as oimatey put it, its time to put up or shut up, :o)

but anyways, it dosent take as much time as u think, intially yes, but afterwards 5mins at the most a week and everytime after that is stricktly ur choice. im sure as foreman of the local copy paste factory, u can find the time to spare, LMAO, :oP
