Siormers Team for Saturday
January 30, 2013, 17:47:24

The following team will represent the Syormers in their warm up game against the Cheetahs coming Saturday.

tormers: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Gio Aplon, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Kurt Coleman, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Duane Vermeulen (capt), 7 Don Armand, 6 Nizaam Carr, 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements (from): 16 Stephan Coetzee, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Ruan Botha, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Rayn Smid, 21 Dewaldt Duvenage, 22 Pat Howard, 23 Gerhard van den Heever, 24 Joe Pietersen.

I did not think that Schreuder - who broke a leg a while ago - would be ready to play as yet.   However, I like him as a player - and he can also move to flyhalf if needed.   Not bad selection that one.

The backline has two weak links - namely De Jongh and to a lesser extent Coleman,  I always regarded the latter as a good Vodacom Cup player and cannot see how he will perform on the higher level.   I am afraid that unless De Allende put some life into the backline - the dead backline syndromne would continue.    I hope De Jongh is replaced early by Howard - that should improve backline performances massively.

I am going to watch the following players with keen interest:-

Taute, Howard, De Allende, Schreuder, Malherbe and Kitshoff

I think all of the above can come into the picture as tests team players in future..

De Allende and Taute will be the ones to watch for me. Wouldn't mind seeing Carr have a good game. He's a pretty good rugby player.

Go Stormers!

After the season Etzebeth had last year I would have given him more time off! Will be very interesting to see some young players and also whether the Stormers will be more attack minded.

Why play Habana also - Give Howard a chance etc. Its a long season and the older players have the experience etc. How much does the result mattter?

Did somene say the other day Habana was small at 96 kg?

Don Armand was an unsung hero in the Currie Cup so interesting to see him still in the mix

Yes this will be an interesting match. Cheetahs will field a stronger side with a very nice backline.

I was thinking the same thing, Beeno. Etzebeth and Habana have had maybe 2 months off??? Maybe Coetzee will play them the first half just to get their legs going.

The Stormers really need to move on from the very average de Kock Steenkamp. Young Ruan Botha should provide the answer sooner than later - lets just hope Coetzee wakes up to this fact

Mike, Duvenhage broke his leg and Louis Schreuder replaced him as preferred 9. I like Groom better though.

Canned rugby where is our candian guy playing this season - name slips my mind. He did a job for us for sure. Wish him well.

He certainly sorted out Deysel. We Stormers dont take any lip from the sharkies!

Yes de Kock is a back up lock snapster. But again why not play the youngster Ruan Botha and buy a bit of experience.

Groom to me looks our best scrummie but Schreuder has gone up  in my estimation. Duvenage is too passive. Merely a link and seldom attacks the opposition. He needs to work on that aspect a he does have talent

As a great friend - can you please give us a write-up about this weekend warm up games in New Zealand.  May be wrong - but I think the -

*    Hurricanes is playing the Crusaders;

*    Chiefs is playing the Higlander Geriatrics;and

*    The Blues is playing the Reds.

We will not see anyone of the games on local TV - so please help out.   I will try my best to give a breakdown of the local warm-up games and not like Saffex get carried away by blnkers.

Now my predictions:-

*    The Hurricanes will teach the Crusaders a much-needed rugby lesson;

*    The Geriatrics wil fade out against the Chiefs; and

*     The Reds will play ping-pong with the Blues.

Strong phrases - but lets see what happens.   Maybe I will be taught to keep my big trap shut.

@mikey,

sorry buddy, but i live in melbourne and theyre not showing ANY warm up games at all, not even the OZ ones, :o(

i was told though from a kiwi mate that we should be able to live stream the match though, so hopefully he comes through with that link cos i cant find anything online that says otherwise.

i wouldnt mind going to a rebels preseason game in hobart though??? my brother and i a re thinking of going down for the weekend to tazzy. mainly to watch folau play though, cos i wouldnt waste my time watching an all aussie darbie even if it were in melnourne, cos that is one mind numbing snore fest.

hope u post some the ins and outs of ur preseason games and ur views though, all ways a good read, :o)

Beeno,

Jebb Sinclair is back with his original club in the Premiership; The London Irish. They're struggling a bit in that league right now. Battling to stay out of relegation. But are surprisingly having a good LV cup.

Haaaahahahahahaha! Is that really the best the Hapless Stompies can do? What a CRAP team!

Habana, De Jongh and Aplon are the only good players in the Stompies squad. Taute is okay and Etzebeth would be good if he wasn't always trying to be some kind of hard case . . . but the rest are nothing short of RUBBISH!

It's going to be hilarious watching the Sharks give their Bunnies yet another humiliating rogering this year. The Sharks Super Rugby rejects would stick 50 past this sorry excuse for a team.

The best that the Hapless Stompies can hope for this season with that pathetic squad is to finish above the Kings.

Go Sharks!!!

My dearest wish as a Shark supporter is that the Stormers keep one selection in place and that is De Jongh.  He will neutralize their whole backline - hope they don't play him against oter opposition - they deserve better.

Ou Maaik, trust me, I have noticed how you try to find new and original ways to tell the world just how much you dislike Juan de Jongh and you generally mention how much you hate De Jongh in about every second sentence of every post you make . . . but you're not going to change my mind through sheer repetition. I rate De Jongh.

I like Paul Jordaan and I don't think we've seen the best of Johann Sadie but De Jongh is still the best outside centre we have in the country and he's one of the few Stompies who actually poses any kind of threat.

I think we have to accept that we will always disagree about De Jongh.   Lets get this straight - I do not hate any rugby player - I just do not accept mediocrity - and other than a try in the CC final and two against the Rebels he has not scored anyhing for nearly two years and contributed nothing else.   He is way too small to play at center and he does not have the skills set to off-set ihis lack of bulk.  That remains my summary of the player concerned.

I asked elsewhere can I join your league on fantsy rugby, please.

Ou Maaik, the fact that you say we'll never agree shows how inflexible you are. You'll never change your mind and even if De Jongh puts in a man-of-the-match performance in every game this season, you'll still be droning on about how useless he is because your mind has been made up on this issue.

Yes, of course you're welcome to join my Fantasy Rugby pools at www.testrugby.com and fantasy.supersport.com. I put up links to both websites on Sasuke's thread and in both cases the pool is called "StupidZone". Let me know if you have any problems.

PS Juan de Jongh is great value for money! LMAO!

First of all I am not inflexible - if De Jongh ups his game and becomes frquent MOM - I would change my mind about him.   MY adverse comments on him was the result of poor to average performances over nearly two years.   He is a good defender - but on attack he is harmless.

I ned your code number to join your league - I assume it is a private one.  Please help.

but i was wondering if u were serious about de jong being great value for money??? were u talking about it from a fantasy sense or just generally speaking???
i dont remember him being too much to speak of from a fantasy sense on the foxsport site, so i will be interested to see how the scoring systems work on those other sites.

Still no league ref number - please help

By th way De Jongh at $285 000 is bloody expensive - not worth half that money.  Jordaan at $160 000 is really good value and boiund to be a real point scoring machine.

Ou Maaik, if you take the trouble to actually read my Fantasy Rugby post (click here) you'll notice that no reference number is required and the information you need is all there. Please at least attempt to join before asking for help so I can understand what you're struggling with. I registered many years ago but I don't remember the process being difficult.

Sasuke, I only said that about De Jongh to wind ou Maaik up a bit. I hadn't even looked at his FR value to be honest.

De Jongh badly under-performed for two years - his stats proved excatly that - and should not have been in th team at all.  Then came th CC final and he gave away a rubbish penalty converted by Lambie.   A while later Catrakilis attacked the gaim line going towards the inside center - drew both Lambie and the Sharks center in to defend and left a gap for De Jognh to run into and scored.   Net gain through him of 4 points in one game.

Was it a flash in the pan - most definitely yes. He showed nothing before that game and nothing since.   Was bad in the Scotland test and went AWOL in the England test.   Contribution to both was near to zero in the Scotland test - and minus zero in the England test.

However, you have written him up before and could not stop prasing him for the try in the CC final.   So keep it up - I suppose in another year he may with luck score a try and then the refrain will be endless.    If ever there wa a test center not worth his salt it is the small De Jongh.

Like you did in the past with Doppie la Grange - I am going to bank Jordaan as a selection in every game he plays in - at $160 000 he is good value for money and the best of the lower-cost players,  That allows me to use the funds stemmig from this to augment the higher cost components  of my selections.

Depending on how he goes - another good investment could be Pieter-Steph Du Toit at $100 000.   Watch out for this guy this year

@clevermike,

in fantasy rugby they for some reason talk about players increasing their cash value based on their performances, but unless something has changed from the past seasons, it dosent change enough to effect the week to week operations/transfers.
a player who preforms well for the whole season, might in crease his value by 20k - 40k by the end of the season.
so dont take the expected rise in valueof players when making selections.

last year i had cj strander (untill the bulls started to bench him after he announced he was leaving, soooo stupid) & marcel coetzee in my teams, they were like jordaan in that they were cheap as.
if u look at marcels fantasy price now, hes gone up quite a lot, but im still picking him for this season.

I changed the above posting and added Pieter-Steph Du Toit to my list of cheap  players that may do well.   Other cheap investments could be De Allende - in games in which he starts and Botha of the Bulls - especially in local derbies.

I certainly plan to have Marcel Coetsee in my set-up from Round 2 onwards.

@mikey,

i have du toit in my team too, but will probaly take him out, while hes cheap im not 100% sure he will be starting, especially with franco van der mewe in the team???
i cant help but feel that maybe plumtree will prefer a locking combo of bressler/van der mewe.

ive got reatlick on my bench and will prob partner him up with the ezebeth from rnd 3 onwards.

I think Du Toit may be ahead of Van der Merwe in the selection stakes of the Sharks.   Plumtree has a vey high opinion of him and Franco is in my opinion not really tops.

The way the competition is structured this year - with 4 Aussie teams only in round 1 - a person may be forced to make drastic changes thereafter - perhaps only possible through wildcart usage.  Howevr, I wish they would change the rules to allow for more changes after Round 1 - especially in view of the earlier start by the four teams than the others.

Otherwise a person must just put in four or five players from the Assie teams concerned and forget about getting much points in Round 1.  What do you think of that idea?

@mikey,

theres an understandble logic to forgoing the first round, but i still feel its a bad idea, would rather use the wildcard if it comes down to it.
if u build ur team and exclude a lot of those 1st rnd players, u could be playing catch up, but it does suck that the players u put on the bench are not gurnateedmto be even playing next week.
worst case scenario is ur stuck with aussie players u normally wouldnt pick for the first 3 to 4 rounds which i think is how im going to roll.

foxsport sort of screwed up, even though they gave us 6 transfers for round2, its not enough to account for a whopping 11 teams having a bye, especially if u prefer SA/NZ players to make up the bulk.of ur team.
it really is quite unprecedented, so maybe ur tactic will work.

In going through the list of players on FOXSPORT I found that -

*   Danie Poolman (wing)  is on  the list - whilst he has in fact departed for Europe and is not playing for the Sormers anymore;

*   I could not find Jaco Taute's name - either as a full back or as a center: and

*   Damian De Allende is not listed - he could either play on the wing or as a center.

Poolman is definitely out and De Allende and Taute should be on the list.     What bow?
