It will be an interesting match after the Cheetahs lost 33-17 to the Lions, the relegated South African team, over the weekend.

The Stormers have been back on deck for three weeks now - since their December recess - and they will now have a chance to flex their muscles in a match situation on Saturday (kick-off 17h00).

"The Cheetahs game will be a good indication for us," said Coetzee.

"I'm pleased with the energy in the squad at present and I'm sure the players are also looking forward to playing some rugby. You want to make sure you get confidence in your systems, confidence in the fitness and confidence in the team - you have to build up in these pre-season matches."

Coetzee revealed that hooker Deon Fourie, flanker Schalk Burger and centre Jean de Villiers were all unavailable for this weekend due to a variety of minor niggles and loose forwards Siya Kolisi and Rynhardt Elstadt were also in doubt.

Then, of course, new flyhalf Elton Jantjies is currently on personal leave after the death of his father, Thomas, at the weekend.

"It's really sad, a real tragedy for the Jantjies family and we want to support Elton in whatever way we can," said Coetzee. "Once his dad has been laid to rest, we'll assess how he feels."

Speaking about the injury niggles in the DHL Stormers squad, the coach continued: "Schalk had one session on Monday morning and has a bit of a tight calf, but one session was sufficient in terms of what he had to do in terms of his fitness.

"Jean had a cyst removed and he still has a couple of stitches in his neck. There is no need to rush him back.

"Deon Fourie took a knock on his quad and has a haematoma. It's just precautionary, as we don't want to risk him with the situation at hooker. Youngster Stephan Coetzee and Martin Bezuidenhout (who joined us at training today) will feature at hooker against the Cheetahs. Martin has fitted in nicely. He looks sharp, as he's had a game under his belt.

"Siya Kolisi is down with tonsillitis," added the Stormers boss, "we'll see how it goes on Tuesday and if he is not ready then I probably won't select him.

"Rynhardt is also still on the sidelines. I'm still not happy with the recovery of his hamstring, which he tweaked last week. It's not serious, but there is no need to push Rynhardt to play - he'll be fine for the Boland game."

Aside from Elstadt, Coetzee remains confident that all the above-mentioned players - who are carrying niggles at present - will be available for the Boland match at the Cape Town Stadium on February 9 (kick-off 14h45).

The coach concluded: "Like I've said before, the guys have to play. You have to play a certain number of minutes in order to be considered for the first game against the Bulls (on February 22)."

of all these niggles its the one to burger which has the biggest question marks and if i was a burger fan i would be a little worried.

hes missed enough games to make 2012 one to forget (not that the stormers aka the most boring team in the world helps in any way, LMAO, :oP), so the reality is if hes being held back because of some niggles, one has to ask just how bad those niggles are???

burger needs to play as many games as possible before the spXV starts, this will help evalute him and see what nees to be done, test his body physically and get rid of any ring rust.

the earlier he gets back on the feild, the sooner he can he really see where hes at and if need be, be rested for the other pre season matches.

a big hmmmmmmmmm, o_O IMO regarding burger.

Sasue

I have my reservations about Schalk for a while now and another niggle can still be a sign of things to come.   The other niggles seems minor and could be the result of starting up after the break in rugby.

Would be interesting to see who Coetzee plays at inside center and also at flyhalf.  Maybe after being injured virtually uninterrupted for nearly 2 years it may be Van Aswegen.   Schreuder is not avaiaklabke as wel.  We might just see something of Swiel in this game - especially if Van Aswege cannot play.

yeah i wasnt to worried about the other niggly injuries to other players, not that i was overly worried about burgers, but his one did catch my attention.
IMO deon fouire is the key to the stormers 2013 success, most important player in the stormers squad.

i take it then that timo swiel is off Boks u20 duties??? i would love to see him get a crack, even in a pre season match.

FYI, i showed the utube clip to some kiwis on the kiwi forums, best comment in reply to his video was, that aint no saffa, hes a kiwi, saffas dont know how to play entertaing rugby, LMAO, :P
while i dont necessarily agree with the comment,,,,,,,,,,,,, well not entirely anyway, it did crack me up, LMAO, :oD

The trial matches has been completed and the school kids sent back to their schools - while the others are back wit their provincial contract holders.

Thanks for the story abpout the kiwi comments - I really enjoyed it.   LOL.   Anyway it really is a tragedy that the SA coaches over the years managed to coach the youngsters out of their natural playing abilities - there are many players wirth acute ball sense all over SA - but they have no chance to go through to higher levels.   The one who recently came nearest to that is Jordaan - but he is not really appreciated by the donkey coaches who run our rugby..

The Stormers have better youngsters as options than hasbeens Jean and Schalk - de Allende and Kolisi are far better bets

I agree with you about De Allende.   In the CC final he showed some skills in making effective breaks and off-loading balls in tackle situations and he has speed and scored tries - some things a player like Francois Steyn never showed.  He is my ideal big player WITH SKILLS.

I think Kolisis will probably play on Saturday.  He started off like a house on fire in  Super 15 last year - but faded out later  in the season.   For that reason he is likely to be mostly on the bench in most Super 15 games this year.

Schalk’s body angle is way too upright when running the crashball. He gets pounded in contact because of it and one’s body can only take so much before it starts to give in.

His days as the Bok 6 are numbered. Personally I wouldn’t consider him for national selection.

Much better fetchers out there than he … not that I ever considered him a proper fetcher in anycase.

Greetings again Hakwa - with your return my work load just doubles. I have been trying unsuccessflly to keep ou brycy on the right track - meagre returns for much effort.!!  I hope for better in your case.

Hakwa read the article carefullty and you will discover it refers to minor niggles and , in Shalks case, a tight calf. Hardly an injury of any note hakwa. I do realsie the wee abs always get nervous hen Schalk's name comes up. It may be linked to wee mcaaaws sabbatical but that may also be linked to his lady of the night liaison as well. ROTFL   What a year of scandal for the abs it was. Contrast that to the Boks - nothing besmirching their good name.

Schalk being fit is a great boost to the Stormers. This legendary Bok still, at 29 and coming back after a long rest period, has  a lot to offer the Stormers. If he comes back to form he will be in the Bok mix.

As fo Jean (So much nonsense said about him by the uninformed) he was one of the best Bok backs last year where he was badly overplayed. Outstanding effort by Jean. We all know he is getting on and I trust that that dope Coetzee will manage him and his other players better this year.

Allende is a great propsect and so is Du Plessis etc.

Kolisi did, as Mike said, fade badly last season. Super 15 was a bit too tough for the youngster and ou Alistair of course managed him badly as well. In playing ability he ranks behind Burger (When fit) and Deon Fourie.

Deon Fourie is about the only smaller loosie I would conside for the Boks - he was last season way ahead of greenhorn Kolisi and a lot better than Brussouw.  snapster has no clue really. All his sees of course is age. Young enough - put him in. Bwahahahhahahaha - all you can say in ou snapsters favour is that he is consistent.ROTFL ROTFLROTFL

Beeno

You are building skyscapers again and in your ethusiasm  about the Stormers getting beyond the realm of realism again.

Lets deal with the issue of Burger first.   He was a very good loosie - but is he still good enough afte the absence of a year or more from competitive rugby.   I will only be convinced by him playing top class rugby on a sustained basis - unless I see that happening he is not an asset and could even be a liability.

Now for the issue of De Villiers.  He was the best center for the Springboks - but then we have to bear in mind the other centers.   All of them were unsatisfactory palookas and in a test devised by me after consultation about requirements with other measures  - they failed hopelessly.   Remember the old saying "in the land of the blind [removed]eye is king".  De Villiers was the best compared to the other mamaparas - but his performances can at best be described as average.

Now for another issue.   I understand that both Jantjies and Grant will not be available for selection at flyhalf on Saturday - so there will be a problem for the Stormers.   Van Aswegen is an injury waiting to happen and I was hoping that they would give Swiel a chance to play - bearing in mind it is only a warm-up game.   I don't expect though that Coetzee - a real donkey coach - will be prepared to do that.

In the absence of De Villiers - I assume that De Allende will be the 12.   Problem would be with 13 though.   De Jongh is diabolical - he is an expert in destroying backline play and or in going AWOL in games.   If he is in the backline- you can wriie off attacking backline play.   I would prefer Du Plessis or even Howard aahead of De Jongh.

My ideal backline for Saturday would be the following:-

15           Taute

Wings     Habana and Van den Heever

Centers   De Allende and Du Plessis

Flyhalf     Swiel

          .
