Dumpy Dave versus Andy Murray
January 27, 2013, 23:33:59

Andy Murray has recently put on three more lbs of muscle. Many a commentator has noted how huge his legs are and how powerful he looks. So we now have:

Novak Djokovic ......6' 2 " and 176 lbs

Andy Murray looking massive at ......6' 3"  and 190 lbs

And Dumpy Dave, the squatster at .......5' 10 " and 220 lbs.

Murray is built like you - a brittle weed of a man.

My 15 year old would snap you like a twig

Funny how you and the other Twin Toilet Roll keep bringing family members into your material. My guess is your 15 year old is mortified with your Board persona...and dear old Becs.

I tried, but as I watched those 6' 3" muscular chaps who weigh 40 lbs less than you.....I couldn't help but reflect on all the lard packed on your 5' 10" Dumpy Dave frame. But you tell me it runs in the family....so perhaps it's just a genetic predisposition and not all the pork pies. In which case there really isn't much hope.

Once again, Dave absolutely outclassed and outwitted and what does he do, revert back to KKK and racism...ha ha predictable and sad...

Not much to this Dave chap...I have read him like a book. Short, fat, ugly, [removed] in person, tough guy over the net. Not much intellect.

What a hypocrite, this dead music man is? He is spilling his guts on the thread started by the self appointed forum  sherriff, Maaik, about personal attacks, etc. Meanwhile, back at the ranch he starts threads like this one. What a plank. Next thing, we can expect the rest of his little lapdogs, Ben10, Denise, etc to jump in for their 2c worth as well. I see Boklogic has already arrived.

Yes, I'm with Bongani here.

Moffie really is a sickening hypocrite and when you see his Servile Gimps like Baboon-ou, Dense and Boklogic running around, pointing fingers and trembling with self-righteous indignation as they try to justify all these pathetically childish threads that he starts then you have to just shake your head in wonder. It's actually hard to believe.

I am nobody's lapdog and I support nobody in this childish crap. I have agreed and disagreed with every one on this board in the past. I have disagreed wit Dave on many occasions.

I am just amazed at how immature people, who are supposed to be very classy and highly educated, can be.

What I do know about Mozart is that about a year ago he started tge same crap on another board and got his ass whipped by someone, when he tried his lies and crap on another subject. He then pissed off with his tail between his legs, blaiming the fact that one of his non-rugby related threads was moved to a general forum. He was duly followed by his two lapdogs Denise and Ben10.

Bongani, it's actually been going on for much longer than that. You should have seen the fierce competition on the old SuperSport board many years ago between Dense, Baboon-ou (and some of the other Servile Gimps) to see who would become what we called Moffie's Alpha-Gimp.

It was hilarious to watch the two of them snapping and snarling at each other as they jostled to see who would be first to ram his snout up Moffie's pale wrinkled arse. I see all these years later, not much has changed . . . except now we also have the likes of Boklogic trying to . . . ahem . . . "butt" in on the action!

OBTHW care to explain why you're hiding behind a new nick? Love it when you self righteous [removed]s don't have the guts to hang with your old nicks.

Bongi care to tell us what name you posted under of SS board?

We have at last even got an admission from jalo that he is rooinek. - as Denny realised so quickly.

Its always nice to know who is who in the zoo but for some weird reason we have all these disguises and folk afraid to post under their old names.

Mozart getting his butt kicked by a few half wits there. Hahahahahaha - please keep it real.

Come on Bongi out of the closet with you. Pluck up your courage and say who you were.

Your call not mine.

Perhaps the truth can be found if you yourself explain why you've chosen to disguise your identity. I bet there's no chance of that happening.

Weren't you "denysschen" or some such name back on the SS boards, Dense? Why is it okay when you change your name yet you soil your frilly pink panties when someone else does?

Your question "umm what you got?" is rather poor English but to be honest, I don't expect much more from an uneducated dim bulb like you, but ask yourself that question anyway and try not to be too much of a coward to answer it yourself.

Well Moffie, quite apart from the fact that it's none of your business and forgetting for a second the stinking hypocrisy of someone who gets all tearful if anyone mentions his family, I can tell you that Mrs Jalapeno and I don't have the insecurities you obviously suffer from. I don't get all emotional and upset if my wife finds another man attractive and therefore she doesn't have a problem telling me.

Just a wild guess, but I'm guessing your wife would never dream of telling you if she thinks another man is good-looking because you'd throw a tantrum and you'd sulk for months . . . so she panders to your out-of-control ego by lying and saying that she only finds you . . . a geriatric and foppish stick insect . . . attractive.

Is that a bit close to the truth, Moffie? Wehe!  I see you're shuffling your feet, going a bit red in the face and wondering for the first time if it's really bridge that Mrs Moffie plays every Thursday night!

Hey, you senile old turd. I have pointed out earlier how you posted your BS on ou Maaik's thread. You tried to creat the impression that you are more or less always reacting in retaliation. The truth is that it has always been your MO to try and belittle other posters whereever you go. Remember how TC kicked your ass before you pissed off with your tail between your legs the last time you tried this. Remember your post on ou Maaik's thread? You said that you would respond to Dave/Rooinek's tactics. Now to my mind, it is not a response when you start a new thread with the specific purpose of staring new crap again.

Neville Chamberlain never stopped the thugs....nor will Mike's tactics. I have no beef with any posters on the Board....except this  Dave/RooiAAS cabal. I believe in polite disagreement, respecting the other poster's point of view and debate. But I don't believe in appeasement. As long as this motly crew continue their tactics, and Webbie doesn't call a halt....I will respond in kind. Sorry if you disagree.

RE: Dumpy Dave versus Andy Murray

Hahahaha  we have the whole motley crew absent their leader Dave. Let me take your points one for one:

1)  RooiAAS I don't condone family members becoming part of the debate. But you put MrsRooiAAS/Jalapeno in as the deciding view in the debate. So she becomes fair game. Just as your sister did when you discussed her acting career and remember all those agonizing discussions about your son's rugby career a few years back? So what S15 team is he playing for now?

But I never discuss my family members on the Board, so leave my family out of it.

I wonder did Granny RooiAAS find Dave attractive because he is different/younger. Or because he reminded her of you.....I guess we'll never know. But your strong support of Dave's claims when you know he is lying, makes me suspect the latter.

2) Becs I'm sure Dave Junior would prefer no comment about his father's body on a chat site. But I'm also sure he would find your [removed]ual innuendo much more uncomfortable.

3) Bongo showing your true colours? Just another stupid SS member using a different alias. Why? Because you have too much baggage with your old one obviously. No matter you are obviously so thick we can start from scratch.

Lesson number one.  I respond I don't initiate. But responding doesn't preclude me from responding in a new thread. Starting a new thread on arguments that already exist is not initiating, it's continuing. Got that dumbo?

Why you taking cheap shots at me now whilst accusing others of brown nosing. Can you not see the hypocrisy that you and Bongani display.

Bongani references this post as "childish" then he goes on to indulge in it.. You mention people brown nosing yet you are so far up Dave's ass its unreal. I am not interested in what you and Dave get up to in personal time but dont involve me in threads because I haven't mentioned you in any. I have my thoughts on you but I have never aired them.

Ou Boklogic, I have seen this movie before remember, just in a different movie house. This old geriatric with the wig fools nobody. This happens every year when there is no SH rugby going. He did it this year starting one stupid thread after the other with the same theme. [removed]' height, width, etc. He did the exact same thing last year with the exact same central theme. Of course his two lapdogs carried on for days on end that he be begged to return, when he eventually pissed off. That was after someone kicked his wrinkled ass and exposed his lies one after the other. That is why he is probably so hellbent on proving others to be liars. Could it be because he is standing behind the door himself?

Nothing is "proven" Bongo Bongo. You asserted by starting a new thread I was the initiator. Obviously stupid. I ask you to produce one lie....one claim I have made that isn't true. You can't. So far we have a bunch of insults and foul language, but not one teensy-weensy fact.

By the way, I think you'll find last year we were at least in part debating the length of Dumpy Dave's train ride to the city.....again because he had made some absurd claim of being a big wig London lawyer....rather spoilt now by his removal to some provincial dump.

Provincial is a term that can apply if you have provinces, states or counties Dumpy Dave Stupid. Here's the definition:

"Definition of PROVINCIAL

1
: the superior of a province of a Roman Catholic religious order
2
: one living in or coming from a province
3
a : a person of local or restricted interests or outlook

b : a person lacking urban polish or refinement "

Look particularly at 3a and b.

Moffie, if by "Granny Rooiaas" you're referring to my wife then please don't whine and squeal like a pathetic little [removed] if I do the same as you and drag your unfortunate wife into mud-slinging on this board . . . not that I would, I'm not as ill-bred as you . . . but still.

Now, before your little lower lip starts quivering with self-pity, please note that I truly couldn't give a flying toss how a childish, vindictive and repellent little man like you tries to justify this kind of thing so please don't bore me or waste my time with the reasons why you think it's acceptable to involve a person's family on these boards, all I'm saying is don't bleat like a baby if I do the same. Okay Moffie?

I can also tell you that my wife is way too much woman for a classless and self-opinionated old queen like you to handle. If Mrs Jalapeno had to even look in your direction (use your imagination here because trust me, she wouldn't), you'd go all crimson faced and you'd wet your pants as you ran to the toilet so you could beat your pathetically small and shrivelled little [removed].

Stick to your obsessions about other posters looks or their height and leave wives and family out of it. There's a good chap . . .

Boklogic, it's true, we don't know each other very well but to be perfectly honest, for some reason I have you pegged as one of Moffie's less interesting cheerleaders who apparently left South Africa a few years ago and now spends most his time slagging off the adopted country that gave him a second chance. Since then, all I've seen to add to that admittedly sketchy board profile is the fact that you're the kind of neanderthal who would threaten someone who is tens of thousands of miles away with physical violence.

Perhaps I'm being a bit unfair. You're welcome to prove me wrong.

I can't help it if you have a smutty mind, Mozart. You can read into things whatever you want, you usually do that so why change the habit of a lifetime ? Red is black if you say so, possibly morning is night too. So you carry on, thinking your way.

But you see, you're the one who started the constant belittleing of [removed]'s height/weight/looks, as well as everything else. It seems you just cannot stop thinking about him and that really is the most disturbing fact. If I were a 15 year old boy, I think I'd rather a woman, or in this case women; given that Mrs Jal and many of my friends have met [removed] and found him to be a lovely man in all respects, found their Dad attractive than have a man who just cannot stop commenting/thinking about his Dad's body !!

And if you are trying to suggest impropriety of some sort between [removed] and I, that's old news. Sharkie tried that one years ago and I'd treat any suggestion with the same contempt now as I did then.

Well put, Becs.

There is actually an admittedly disturbing explanation for Moffie's obsession and the fact that he's been banging on about Dave's looks and height for about 8 years now . . . perhaps Moffie tried to hit on Dave when they met and got blocked?

You have to admit, it would explain this bizarre obsession Moffie has with trying to make Dave appear short, fat and ugly and let's face it, Moffie does seem like the kind of spiteful and vengeful person who would conduct a campaign like this if he felt his advances had been spurned. We should ask Dave if he remembers Moffie getting a bit close up and personal that day!

Most bizarre thing I came across ever. 8 Years. This thing would have died a slow death many moons ago if Moz and his corner were the only obsessive ones. 8 years is looong. Must say, although Dave's girth and length seems to be the common theme, it has evolved a bit to also include his hair(or lack thereof) and plagiarism.

I must however say that the general themes in that piece on center play by [removed] were the same as what he has been preaching all along and it seemed to me that he applied himself without getting caught up in the handbag stuff.
The rest of the stuff are argumentative. To a dwarf 6'8 would also be six- footish. Perspectives differ. Can we not vote on the thing and be over and done with it?

Hey Becs we would love to meet this lovely man here on the website. Way back dave used to be a reasonable poster but has deteriorated as time has gone by.

Becs have a word in ou snapsters ear would you. Ask him to up his game etc. All these insults make many folk here think he is socially challenged.  It must be embarrassing for you to read his insulting posts to all and sundry. You surely cannot have missed how he insults even new folk who barely know him.

Do you know why he is behaving so badly?  Maybe you have some insights?

No Moffie, I didn't say you'd freeze. If you read my comment again . . . and get someone with basic literacy skills to help you with the hard words . . . you'll see I said nothing about you freezing, I said you'd go all red-faced, you'd wet your adult nappy and then you'd run off to go and pluck on your feeble little [removed].

Let me know if you're still struggling to understand basic English and I'll try using smaller words. Not sure what else I could do short of drawing you pictures.

Beeno is right about your material being stale. When did you first use that one.....2003? But sadly in the process you have again blown it. Last I read, Ovid was still considered a classical poet, and Wikipedia describes his writing thus:

"In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid (Metamorphoses 4.770), Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, "the jealous aspiration of many suitors," but when she was caught being raped by the "Lord of the Sea" Poseidon in Athena's temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa's beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone. In Ovid's telling, Perseus describes Medusa's punishment by Minerva (Athena) as just and well earned."

Apparently though in the Clash of the Titans only men can be turned to stone. Don't tell me that's your "exposure to the classics".

Wrong Jalapeno. I moved to NZL because it was a family decision. Had nothing to do with me. My family has been here 6 years. I have been here for 3. I stayed on in SA as I was working my way through my CFP. I wasdoing financial advising for Momentum and then Sanlam. I left when it was time to leave and SA no longer offered me the opportunities I was hoping for. Much like many other South African's.

Jalapeno, let me ask you something. If someone was a real [removed] and went out of there way to be exactly that in every dialogue they had with you, whether you addressed them or not, would you not wana give them a klap? I am not like you or [removed]. I dont join 100 different boards to talk [removed] under different aliases knowing I am safe. I life in the real world. I joined this site to talk rugby and it started off great with guys like Beeno, Sasuke, Mike, Sharkbok and others. I live my life by treating others as I would wana be treated hence the reason I have never got personal with anyone on here because that is the epitomy of a coward. That is what you and Dave do all the time because you are "safe" behind your screens. I put the question to Dave, "Would you say the things you say to all of us to our faces!" I couldn't get an answer because he knows the truth. I dont threaten him because I am miles away. Hell, Dave may even be able to smack me over but we will find out if he is man enough and that is for sure. You cant talk sense into an idiot like him, therefore he must feel.

You call me "Moffie's cheerleader" which is rich coming from you with your interests in Dave but as I have said. I have never met anyone from this board, I am not in personal contact with anyone nor do I even know Mozart's real name. Mozart is a much my cheerleader (if you will) as I am his, as I am Beeno's and vice versa. The common fact is we all think Dave is a [removed] and he is yet to prove us wrong. Judging by what blokes say about you and your alias, you have already proved yourself one!

Listen Moffie, you phenomenally, stupid little man, just point out the bit in my comment where I mentioned freezing or turning to stone . . . and then, when you fail, feel free to admit that you made a gigantic fool of yourself. That's all, although I will understand if you chicken out and try change the subject instead.

Boklogic, you seem to have mistaken my earlier comment for a request for you to spill your rather boring life story. I don't really care where you live, how long you've been there or what kind of work you do, I was only commenting on the fact that you seem to be one of those despicable leeches who emigrates to a country and then slags that country off at every opportunity. Not sure why you thought I might give a toss whether you worked for Momentum or Sanlam or the Post Office but you're definitely mistaken. I can confirm that I have no interest in you or your job and the only thing vaguely interesting about you is how seriously you take yourself. Sorry.

Seems to me when you said this:

"Medusa turned men to stone, Moffie " ....that was the part where you mentioned turning to stone.

In  any case it's been easy pickings today and a few trades have gone well.....so I'm inclined to be generous. Give my best to Mrs Jalapeno/RooiAAS I'm sure she's a charming and witty person. And were I not stone already she could readily turn me into that material.

No you fool, you spoke about this country giving me a second chance. I came on my own accord when I was ready. I did slag NZL off but that was just to get at some kiwi bloggers who kept having a go at South Africans. I love SA but it was time to leave. End of story.

I dont hate NZL. I like it very much. This is why I do not carry on with the whole NZL thing. It was wrong and they actually really good people.

Problem with you and Dave is you so unhappy in your own lives that you hate to hear how good someone elses can be and prefer to just take what people tell you and turn it into something nasty and horrible. Together you dont have a brain cell to share and the extent of your social life is to have a swingers party with Dave's son and you wife and then log onto SArugby.com to cause kak. How does your wife stay with you or is she the same?

Imagine this idiot giving you financial advice - my heart goes out to all Kiwi's, apologies in advance........lets just hope you have lost the SA accent Boklog, for we dont want you representing us in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

What an insult that would be, its bad enough they have to endure you on a rugby field - financial advisooooor, bwhaaahaaaa.

Your problem is that you are so damn thick you dont even realise it. We clashed, made peace and then you were stupid enough to point fingers at me over racism, something old Moffie is guilty of...........were you too stupid to realise that by pointing fingers, you would evoke a reponse in kind.

Moffie, you're either being deliberately obtuse or else you're very, very stupid. That comment of mine was me very kindly enlightening you about who Medusa was after you used her name in completely the wrong context. Again, if you disagree, explain why you mentioned Medusa in the first place when no-one said anything about turning to stone.

Look, I know it's very important for you to try and save some face in front of your Servile Gimps but I'm sorry to have to inform you that even half wits like Baboon-ou, Dense and this Boklogic buffoon will realize that you screwed up, that you had to quickly look up who Medusa was, realized your embarrassing error and now you're trying to pretend that I was the one who mentioned Medusa first. Better do a bit of editing first, dumbo!

Who said I was a financial advisor here Dave? Turns out the CFP qual from SA is not recognised here, therefore i can no sell NZL products.

I was offered a job with a major insurance company here where they would have got me up to speed with the way things are done in NZL but it was a very junior role and not the direction I wanted to take.

As stated before, I am in recruitment here. When I had to plan my life out, I know the financial game is where I wana be. Financial advising is built on relationships and trust as there are far too many chance takers out there that scare people off. I know people skills and relationships are not your forte' but for me the best way to build a solid client base it to mingle with people that have the money to spend. ie. CEO's and high level management. What better way to get to know their business than to recruit for them. See how the foundations need to be laid.

This ensures I am not sent to some little village to do filing when I am a middle aged man. Remember, I am still only 25 years old Dave.

You might as well give it up Shezza. Bongani is correct. Mozart has been banging this boring drum for years now. For some reason he has a fixation with [removed], and he is dutifully assisted by his two humble disciples Beeno and the mushroom, Denny.

His other main objective is also to try and prove that anybody who does not agree with him is lying through his/her teeth. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. So feel free to enter into debate, but be prepared to be called a liar, or stupid or ignorant or something if you do not fall at the good doctor's feet. As you can see, he is now at [removed]' throat over the use of the word provincial in the UK. I have been here for some years now, myself and I can honestly say that I have not heard the terminolgy being used, let alone being used widespread.

Of course I should expect a hell of a backlash now. unless they choose to ignore it just to make a point.

Otherwise we are doing fine here and looking forward to a bumper season.  We have saSUE setting some guys up on fantasy rugby and rooinek advising on the technical aspects and I will of course be the advisor on rugby matters.

Now please windpomp dont try and add fuel to the fire here. If you can talk some sense please do so.

Shezza is right though the whole thing should be ended.  There are more interesting things to discusss as can be seen by the many topics we have engaged on. ou snapster manners should improve etc.  It all take time and patience.

That includes you, the mushroom and the old fart. But be that as it may, I just do not really bother to post anymore. I view the site more in an entertainment light. You know. it is like when you used to read the newspaper back in the day. You read the sport and then the serious stuff and then, just to round it off, you flip over to the comic strips for a laugh.

Reminds me a lot about a comedy show that we have here, called "Mock the Week". Don't worry though. I do not associate you with any of the participants in the show. They are way above your level of attempted humour.

There are few who would not rather be taken in adultery than in provincialism.
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963).....the author of Brave New World.

I guess he thought it was an expression in common use, which of course it is. This is a laughable defence of Dumpy Dave by Windpomp(I'm surprised actually) , Becs(of course) and the Fat man himself.

Or perhaps you are a George Eliot fan.

Her 1872 work, Middlemarch, has been described as the greatest novel in the English language by Martin Amis[2] and by Julian Barnes.[3]

And she notes provincialism thus:

Quoting Oscar is just a joke and has stuff all to do with context in which you used 'provincial dump' in the first place.

Just admit you [removed]ed this one up bigtime - here is some advice, slink off quietly to save yourself further embarrassment, if that is at all possible you stupid old fool

Moffie your lies know no boundaries. The word 'provincial' is not widely used in the UK at all, no amount of foot stamping will change that. I have been here since 99 and never heard the word used.

There are no provinces in England only counties - I guess even the school kids in SA know that.

Keep searching though Moffie, Leeds is in the county of Yorkshire, not the province of Yorkshire - FACT

I suppose "provincial" in the English context these days is much the same as "agricultural" in a cricket context. Provinces are obviosly Roman concepts and seeing that England as a whole is an ex-Roman Province, I can understand why the Brits would shy away from the word, but to deny its application in England entirely is a bit daft I should think.

Well it's bit of old fashioned snobbery. But probably used quite often still by the urban intellectuals, given it was totally embedded in the English language by satirists like Wilde.  Your agricultural reference in cricket is simlar. And of course Gilbert and Sullivan put the provinces on their famous list:

Then the idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone,
All centuries but this, and every country but his own;
And the lady from the provinces, who dresses like a guy,
And who "doesn't think she dances, but would rather like to try";
And that singular anomaly, the lady novelist[2]
I don't think she'd be missed — I'm sure she'd not be missed!

These Poms are world class snobs.....the concept of a provincial is alive and well.

Draad catch a wake up man, who has denied its application in its entirety? The word 'provincial' is not widely used in England, quite the opposite. In all the time I have lived here, I have never heard the word used in the context referred to originally and I doubt any of my many English mates or colleagues have either. Why would we hear it as its not applicable to England.

England is divided into counties, not provinces. Anyone using the term provicial to describe a particular area of England would be laughed at or excused on the grounds of ignorance. But then again I did not need to tell you this now did I? Unless you believe Leeds to be sitting in the province of Yorkshire?

Look Saff, in this instance, I, being a "[removed]" understood the meaning of "provincial" to be in the line of "plattelands" or "backward". I do not agree with it, but that was the point he was trying to make. It is as clear as daylight, even for a [removed] like myself. You and I both know very well that most Saffas and especially Moz would know that you lot have counties apposed to our provinces. I and most others on this site also know that you and Moz will disagree out of principle and that Becs and Rooinek will back you and Denny and Beeno will side with Moz. Bok logic got jealous and also jumped on the bandwagon!

Leeds is one of the top 10 cities in the England, or even in the UK (Wales does not count for much and Scotland only has Glasgow and Edinburgh).

-

Anywhere higher up than Birmingham are referred to as Northern Monkies in England. Most of the best stuff to come out of England is from London and other Southern England places.

England does not have provinces, we have shire counties, which is what JRR Tolkein was referring to in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Those of us who do not live in towns and cities live in the shires.  Simple as that.

You can quote as many novelists as you like, they were from a time when snobbery abounded and used different terminology than people do today. I have no idea why any do[removed]ent written in the latter years would have that term used. Maybe they can re-write it and make claim that England now has cantons as well !!!

And I do find it a bit rich that you keep going on about the English and their snobbish behaviour....you are the one who tries to belittle others about their jobs/cars/appearances and homes, Mozart. Always have and always have and always will, it seems.

They say the nouveau riche are always the worst sort of people. You prove that time and again.

Better to be noveau riche than noveau poor dear Becs....and the idea that old money is better than new money is the height of snobbishness. In any case you know zip about my family and if and when we were any of these things.

As for your argument about provincial not being a word that applies to England because it doesn't have provinces....absurd. The best English authors, old and new, apply it to English life. Here is another example, applied to accents:

"Public figures with recognisable provincial accents had mixed feelings about the findings. The Liverpudlian poet Roger McGough, who was awarded an OBE in the New Year's honours list, said he thought that prejudice against regional accents had died out."

Or this written by a Booker prize judge in the last  10 years.

SCENES FROM A PROVINCIAL LIFE
Novelist, critic and Man Booker judge, D. J. Taylor offers up his perspective on the current state of new writing and fiction in the UK.

I have just finished a stint as a judge of this year’s Man Booker Prize for fiction: a somewhat sobering four months involving three judging meetings, the reading of over 100 novels, countless telephone calls from newspapers' arts correspondents and – finally – the selection of a winner, D. B. C. Pierre’s Vernon God Little. Theoretically the experience of reading three contemporary UK novels a day for most of the summer ought to qualify one to make all kinds of dazzling pronouncements on the ‘state’ of writing in the UK. In fact, it does nothing of the sort. Just as biography is, of its nature, a snapshot – an individual intelligence appraised by another individual intelligence at a single point in time – so 100 UK novels represent only a fragment of the national literary consciousness, even if (as I rather doubt) such a thing truly exists.

That said, it would be odd if, in the reading of practically every significant novel published in the UK in 2003, certain themes and tendencies didn’t predominate (it was notable, for example, that in book after book the mostly loudly disparaged professional class was journalists). One of the most striking tendencies of the original longlist of 23 novels was the variety of distinctive ‘regional’ English locations on display – novels that were not only set beyond the metropolitan corridor formed by the M25 motorway but were clearly making an aesthetic virtue out of their distance from the heart of literary UK.

Turn Again Home by Carol Birch  The Taxi-Driver’s Daughter by Julia Darling

Thus Carol Birch’s Turn Again Home – my own favourite among the books submitted – was a multi-generational Manchester saga; John Murray’s Jazz etc took ineradicable root in its author’s native [removed]bria; while Julia Darling’s The Taxi-Driver’s Daughter was similarly attached to Newcastle. Pride of place in this pantheon went to Clare Morrall’s Astonishing Splashes of Colour, a first novel by a Birmingham school-teacher which got as far as the final six-book shortlist. Taken together, they suggest that the ‘provincial’ strain in British writing, observable at any time over the past ten years, is rapidly becoming one of its dominant forms.

Astonishing Splashes of Colour by Clare Morrall  Jazz etc by John Murray

Provincialism, of course, is as old as the English novel itself. Middlemarch is a provincial novel, and so is Jude the Obscure and so, up to a point, is Sons and Lovers. In the immediately post-war era, William Cooper’s genre-defining Scenes from Provincial Life was popularly supposed to have authenticated a whole tradition of out-of-London fiction, soon carried on down by John Wain’s Hurry on Down and Kingsley Amis’s. Strictly speaking the emergence of the Cooper/Wain/Amis axis was a false dawn. Cooper’s next novel, delayed for many years by the libel lawyers, was called Scenes from Metropolitan Life. Lucky Jim ends with its hero, Jim Dixon, waiting eagerly on a Midlands' station platform for the London train. He would shortly be followed by his creator. The true post-war provincials were working-class novelists such as Alan Sillitoe (Nottingham) or Sid Chaplin (Tyneside) together with such individual works as, to take a few obvious examples, David Storey’s Booker-winning Savile or Graham Swift’s Fenland epic Waterland.

.

the ‘provincial’ strain in British writing, observable at any time over the past ten years, is rapidly becoming one of its dominant forms."....man that's a killer for Team Dave. Written by a man who judges British literature.

Provincialism  is a term frequently used about Australia and the US which have states, not provinces. Chicago, this elegant world class city I live in, is frequently called provincial by East Coast intellectuals. It has nothing to do with how the country is sub divided....it has to do with attitudes and perceived cultural deprivation.

This was fun and hopefully Team Dave learned that obstinacy is no substitute for knowledge. G,S &M.

Brilliant one Beeno10. I will note this for your performance review come the end of the year. :36_11_6: The man is heading for Beeno 9 status if he keeps this up.

Being provincial is a widely know term amongst educated folk. It does have an air of superiority attached to it. Ou snapster moves in more common circles perhaps an di sunawar of theterm being used as a consequence?

Give me noveau riche any day!!   Nothing like being a self made man.  Of course self made men are objects of jealousy  - turns some green with envy. One should however never compare oneself with others - its unhealthy and leads to many a psychologial  disturbance

Becs snoberry abounds in England still. Are you denying that?  It matters so much where you live and what school you went to. Few folk are as snobbish as the Brit? They all secretly long to be a lord or lady.  Somebody is always despising sombody else because of their accent etc?

Come clean on this please Becs.

No, it's better to be rich like the British Aristocracy that Becs so reveres. The kind that left for the USA after WW1 to line up rich American heiresses as wives,  to save their crumbling British manor homes. See Downton Abbey, which is based on a true story.  In England that passes for class.

In the States nobody gives you anything, but a job. You work hard, if you are helpful to society you make some money. You enjoy yourself freely and in the company of your friends and family. And you give back to institutions and to charities. You teach, you serve on Boards, you make your home available to cultural institutions. And you don't get fooled by jealous types who come up with snide little terms like noveau riche.

Poor old RooiAAS, the man whose boss wouldn't let him attend a rugby match with some Board chaps, he had to work that Saturday. Tell us again about success in life you sad grunt.

I said that they should change the signage on the outside of the building. It should be Reading Provincial Court, and not County Court.

Puleeze....the definition of provincial is right there in the Oxford dictionary. It's a major theme in British literature as shown above and is used to describe Leeds in something as conservative as a Law journal. Educated people would have no difficulty understanding or using the word.  Your dumb brain and that of Becs and sensodyne is locked into the fact that Britain has counties.....and can't get unlocked to understand that , like "Catholic" , it has two meanings. Ah yeah good one, we have Leeds sitting behind London and Birmingham as the third largest city in the UK and given the UK's global status, you expect us to believe it is a provincial city - ie somewhere outside a major city as you put it.

So what you are saying is that Leeds is not a major city - so armed with this outlook you embarked on studying the markets - wow and you moved on from that first line job??

No I'm saying it's a provincial city.....much like Chicago, a vastly bigger metropolis, is a provincial city. As is Birmingham, Munich, Adelaide, Atlanta, and Shenzhen. These are not the primary cities the international community accesses....their role is a regional role.

But I tell you what. You continue to believe provincial is not a word used in England and I will continue to believe it is very much used.

That way you can be wrong and still happy.

Moz, its not about believing, I KNOW the word provincial is not widely used in England, just like I know Leeds is a major city in England.

Thanks for the invite Sasu, but our S15 coverage here in the States is just too erratic. With great planning I can watch the key SA games, but to watch all the action is almost impossible. Have fun!
