instead of the Lions irrelevant friendlies, what about this idea........

Instead of these irrelevant,non-profitable friendly games, that will be reported in a small corner in the sports section of the local newspaper and watched by a stadium attendance of 28 people, wouldn't a better idea have been to put The Lions in the Varsity Cup? Behind Super Rugby and th Currie Cup,its probably the most relevant trophy out there.Whilst The Lions aren't a University, having them in the tournament would be a big scalp for the other teams and the added bonus of  some varsity players who might not make it at a higher level gracing the turf of Ellis Park.Surely a derby between The Lions and UJ,or The Lions playing UCT,Tuks,Stellenbosch,Maties would get more media attention, higher TV ratings, sell more tickets than The Lions playing Russia or The North Pole XV.

Wel then all the Lions have to abide by the rules of the Varsity cup.

They need to be registered students at Lions university, attend classes, have academic performance expectations etc....

No man come one, it will ruin the whole varsity cap.

Obviously certain rules would need to be altered, but surely its better competitive fixtures  than Russia and French lower league teams

No you are then going to change the whole essence of the competition. So for the sake of the Lions to have competitive fixtures you want to change the rules of a different competition to accomodate them, there by ruiining the whole concept of said competition.

Nope sorry not on for me.

I think the Lions have pulled together a very interesting season.

LIons supporters however should be ashamed of their bad support of their team. Pathetic stuff from bedpan and his fellow travellors.

I am not pleased at all as to how the queens got  a super 15 spot but I do think they will get better support than the LIons do at Ellis Park!!  Shame on all Lions supporters. Head hanging stuff!

Take a leaf out of the WP book oaks. Even when  WP are not doing as well as hoped the crowds are probably the best in SA. Ditto with the cricket.

As to the Varsity Cup I think the Lions would be too strong for the varsity boys.

Well playing UJ would attract a bigger crowd than Russia

Stormer you might be right. Local is lewkker

In Louis Luts day the Transvaal were said to  the richest union in the world.  won the super 10. provided the bulk of the WC winning 1995 Bok side.

Luyt came from a desparately poor family and became a business tycoon.  They need another Luyt to turn the ship around. Its very sad that a great union has been brought to ruin like this. If ever anything points to the effect of rot at the top this is it. I am not blaming De Klerk as he is trying and I think they have done about as well as they could in getting a season together. The Lions have only recently shown signs of life - winning the Currie Cup under Mitchell etc.

Why are the Joburg oaks such poor supporters is a question?

Gauteng is the richest area in SA. It makes no sense they should be in this predicament. The Lions, Bulle, Stormers and Sharks are in terms ofpoential our most viable franchises financially speaking  but the Lions have squandered their opportunities. The least viable financially look to be the Cheethas?

You forgot to add al the bloody money the Lions owe the Leopards and Valke(or is it Pumas).

SARU told them to pay the money otherwise they will lose their S15 status. This is conveniently forgotten in the whole debacle about how bad the Lions have been treated, and no one blames them for treating the Leopards and smaller member unions of the Lions Franchise badly, oh noooooo.

And then Fingers are pointed towards the other unions for voting against the Kings. Big thing made about the Cheetahs and Lions making peace because the Cheetahs voted against them in the meeting.

Bull[removed]. The unions where just backing SARU, If you Make a threat, you are supposed to follow up on it. Any parent or manager should be able to tell you this.

Just saying, not sure if they have paid the money by now?

Sasuke: Yes they are competing in the Vodacom cup, and with their current personel, plus the added matches they will in all likelyhood win it.

The problem is crown attendance, that however is only the fault of the fans.

Sasuke: nobody would pay R100 to watch a Vodacom Cup game.Especially since people @ Loftus or Newlands will get to see those games for free as curtain raisers to a marquee Super Rugby game at home to the Sharks or Crusaders.
