Van der Heever want Bok spot
January 10, 2013, 09:49:29

Ex Keo

Gerhard van den Heever aims to build on his strong finish to 2012 and wear the green and gold in 2013.

Van den Heever started seven Super Rugby games for the Stormers last year, on the right wing, including three when Bryan Habana was used at inside centre and three when Joe Pietersen was out with a back injury. He came off the bench on another eight occasions and was an unused replacement twice.

With the Boks on Rugby Championship duty, Van den Heever was a regular starter for Western Province in the Currie Cup, and wore the No 14 jersey in the final against the Sharks after the Boks had returned (Gio Aplon played at fullback with Habana on the left wing and Pietersen on the bench).

Now Van den Heever wants to regain the form that saw him score eight tries in the 2010 Super 14, just one less than leading try-scorers Drew Mitchell and Joe Rokocoko.

When I joined the Stormers [at the beginning of 2012] I lacked confidence and was out of form,’ Van den Heever told keo.co.za. ‘I had lost focus at the Bulls and other things had become more important than being the best on the field. My priorities were wrong.

‘I just wanted to be in the Stormers squad for Super Rugby so I could have some influence on the team. I got a few starts on our overseas tour [against the Crusaders, Reds and Force], things went well, and I regained some of my confidence. Things then went really well for me in the Currie Cup and hopefully I can carry that form into 2013.

‘I’ve got my focus back,’ he added. ‘I want to start every game for the Stormers, I want to be the try-scorer I was for the Bulls in 2010, and I want to be selected for the Springbok squad in June. When I spoke with Heyneke [Meyer] at the Bok training camp last year he told me to work hard and said that there’s no reason why I can’t play for the Boks one day. If you’re the best they have to pick you. (Meyer certainly has the abilty to inspire - witness the resolve of the exhausted and depleted Boks on the NH tour!)

I’ve had interest from French clubs but I want to give it a real crack with the Stormers. I’ve really enjoyed my time in Cape Town and I want to play for the Boks.’ (Will somebody tell these frogs to piss off! - snapster would definitely be best qualified!)

Van den Heever credits Stormers coach Allister Coetzee and attack coach Robbie Fleck for reviving his career.

When I arrived in Cape Town they told me they believed in me, and that I must just go out and be myself. From a team perspective, they gave us structures and maps but also allowed us to be instinctive and creative on the field.’ (Stormers didnt seem too creative in the 2012 Super 15?)

The Stormers began their pre-season training on Monday, and Van den Heever says they are doing things a bit differently this time around.

Last year we did a lot of long-distance running and didn’t rest much. This year, we’ve focused more on direction changes, shuttles and intervals, because the stats from the 2012 Super Rugby tournament show that teams only managed to retain possession for longer than four minutes on four occasions, and three of those were by the Stormers. So we’re doing short drills, which require short bursts of energy, in our pre-season training to simulate what happens in matches.

From a personal point of view, I’ve been working hard on my kicking [out of hand]. A lot of people don’t know I can kick, but I’ve played fullback for the Bulls before, and for the Stormers in warm-up games, and I’d like to become more of a utility back. At the moment, though, I think my best position is wing.

I rate ths guy and hope he has a great season. He is big, fast and has very good footwork. He can break a line etc. Get him right and he definitely will be in the Bok frame.

He has alot to work on though Beeno, he still isn't close to the form that he was in when he burst onto the scene.

He definitely has the potential, we know that from the past, but we will wait and see maybe he makes this the year that he gets back to that form.

I agree with yoiu on this one.  Van der Heever is a very good wing - but he has to compete with Habana and Pietersen for selection and will really have to be the top wing in Super 15 to get anywhere near.

Good player - but is he good enough?

He got out of form when Hougaard was playing on the wing for the Bulls, as FDP was at scrumhalf.

This was when Hougaard was playing well on the wing.

VDheever did look like bok material prior to this. Was surprised that he spent so much time on the bench for the Stormers, but good to see he is geting back to his best form. He has a reallly good step and is fast and strong as well.

Talent Wise he definitely is good enough. however i disagree, I don't think his competition is Habana and Peterson.

His competition is Rhule/Mvovo or whoever gets picked as next in line. At the moment however he is to me good but not really that good. A bit ordinary. However. He wasn't like that when he broke through for the Bulls a few years back. Which indicates that he can give much more.

You forgot about his boot Sharkbok...There at least he has a potential something on both Rhule and Mvovo as he can play fullback as well.

He is potentially a better player than Movo and I think we could see that this year. Rhule is still an unkown quantity but shows a lot of promise.

Van der Heever about has it all and with him its only getting the mind right. Has he turned a corner?

I think JP and Habana are safe this year but Habana's going to France and being 30 next near means a door could open.

One only hopes the Stomers show more attacking flair this year as they have talented backkline players. The Currie Cup was a start.

well uhmm n players that is not even a regular starter being touted as a bok is really another wonderfull shortsighted piece of journalism by the ever loving cocaine ranger keohane....a wonderfull wp propaganda piece by keo well done mate lets nog mince words here van den heever has been pretty much been a no show since his 2 year in pro rugby at the bulls. another player from the bulls backline butchering club. he had so much potential when he came on the scene but since then that promise has not be taken to the next level. playing for both the most penile limp attacking teams in the super comp has not really helped his cause either. players like rhule and mvovo is better rounded players at this stage and if van den heever wants that bok jumper he needs to learn to attack and score tries. depending on how the stormers wants to play this years super comp van den heever might be a victim of one dimensional game pattern and i hope for his sake he can shine in adversity. can he be the answer yes but from what we have seen from him he is not bok quality sorry to say. since moving from the bulls his attacking play since he burst on the scene was as stale as 4 week old salad.

i am civil but not politically correct. there is a difference :)

i just find this piece of one eyed journalism a joke to be frank. a player that has been pretty much a bench warmer now suddenly being prepped to be the next bok winger by a biased journalist that lacks any level of crediablity. old keo must be powering the nose again it seems. rhule and co are much better prospects that van den heever

A talented player who lost his mojo - would be great to see him get it back and he showed signs of that last year. He is Bok material
