Philander out of second test

Port Elizabeth - Proteas seamer Vernon Philander will miss the second Test against New Zealand due to a recurring left hamstring injury.

Philander experienced tightness on the final day of the first Test match at Newlands, when foot holes caused his front foot to slip while bowling.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: “Vernon’s hamstring strain will require a seven to 10 day recovery period at the very least. Although he is responding to treatment received over the past few days, we feel it’s unlikely that he’ll recover in time for this week’s Test match in Port Elizabeth. Besides, with the Pakistan series less than a month away, it’s not worth the risk of aggravating the injury ”
Rory Kleinveldt will earn his third Test cap for the Proteas in the match starting on Friday, January 11 at St Georges in Port Elizabeth.

Ryan McLaren has been added to the squad

A blow for sure but could make the test more interesting. Can't have nz all out again in 19.2 overs!

OK this seems confirmed now...

Steyn and Morkel will have to stand up.

Kleinveldt hopefully will create some opportunity for himself as well as build pressure for the others.

I'm not sold on him yet....

Philander is no dount an excellent bowler - but he seems to be injury-prone.    I can vaguely remember that when he was initially selected there were some qualms raised that he may not have the required fitness to last long enough.

Take the latest two seriess - he was out of the Adelaide test due to injury and is now out of the PE test.   Am very worried about that component of the game.   He seems to be bowling extremely well in the first innings of tests and less so in the second innings of the same tests.

Maybe I am seeing something which is not really a problem - but I am very worried about him

It's the same Injury Mike....The problem with playing with an injury without it having healed properly is just that...Endurance.

Does that explain what you noticed?
