Baby Boks tsquad selection to play 3 universities

Ex Keo.

A girl what do you think of the squad. Good enough to defend world crown? Better or worse than squad that won world cup? I msee Robert Du Preez and Morne Du Plessis sons look to be in the squad?

The SA U20s will play friendlies against three Western Cape universities in January.

Baby Boks coach Dawie Theron has named 34 players for the camp in preparation for the Junior World Championship to be played in France in June.

The camp, to be held in Stellenbosch between 14 and 27 January, will include trials and friendly matches against the UWC (18 January), Maties (23 January) and UCT (26 January).

‘This is a very important camp for us,’ Theron said. ‘We need to settle on a squad and this will be another opportunity for us to do so. There are a lot of boxes that we will have to tick in the two weeks of the camp to make sure we are on track. (Good idea Dawie)

‘The trials should confirm our selections and the training matches will give us a better idea of the various combinations available to us. We will also have to settle on our game plan once we have a clear understanding of our playing personnel.’

BABY BOKS TRAINING SQUAD:

Fullbacks: Cheslin Kolbe, Tim Swiel (Western Province)
Wings: Seabelo Senatla (Free State Cheetahs), Luther Obi, Sylvian Mahuza (Leopards)
Centres: Jan Serfontein, Dries Swanepoel (Blue Bulls), Justin Gedult, JP Lewis (Western Province), Tyler Fisher (KZN)
Flyhalves: Handre Pollard (Blue Bulls), Robert du Preez (KZN)
Scrumhalves: Kirshwin Williams (Golden Lions), Hanco Venter, Stefan Ungerer (KZN)
Loose Forwards: Leneve Dames, Roelof Smit, Ruan Steenkamp (all Blue Bulls), Albertus Smit (Golden Lions), Jurie van Vuuren (Western Province)
Locks: Dennis Visser, Irnè Herbst, Jacques du Plessis, Marvin Orie (all Blue Bulls)
Props: Justin Forwood, Andrew Beerwinkel, Neethling Fouchè (all Blue Bulls), Luan de Bruin (Free State Cheetahs), Marnè Coetzee (KZN), Sti Sithole (Western Province)
Hookers: Jacques du Toit (Free State Cheetahs), Devon Martinus (Golden Lions), Morne du Plessis (KZN), Freddie Kirsten (Western Province)

Beeno

I do not think that from a superficial glance at the players that the team as a whole would be as strong as the 2012 Under 20's were, but A girl may know more than I do from the individual players.   The only ones that I know are top class are Kolbe, Swiel and Serrfomtein.   Not so sure about Pollard - he is solid - but not really the player that could turn a match around.

I cannot see how the 2013 team would have equivalent players to Jordaan, Howard, Willemse. Roux. Du Toit, Liebenberg and Kitshof in the set-up - so in my opinion they will indeed be weaker - but then I may be wrong and I am looking forward to see how these youngsters perform.

Hope the matches against the Umiversities are televised live - so that we can see what talent is really available.

Mike I too am in the dark re many ofthe players and we will have to rely on snapster for some insight. He proved correct in his assessments re the juniour side last time round.

Will Pollard not b eunder 21 next year as well? Solid flyhalf who could blossom?

Pollard is still 18 years of age - and I think he will be 19 in March 2013.  How about asking the Editor to try and get him to approach SARU to support the idea of broadcasting  the trial games live - maybe he could ask them or DSTV (Supersport)  to do all of us a favour by doing that - after all the Junior Bokas are the trophy defenders..

It's another squad brimming with talent.

Kolbe & Swiel have amazing steps and acceleration through the gap. Both will be relied upon as the spark from deep hopefully without much kicking so hopefully they play to their strengths.

Obi (10), Lewis (8), Seanatla (7) scored tries in the u19 Competition as wingers.

Serfontein & Swanepoel are a famous centre partnership from school days at Grey but Swanepoel has had injury problems.

Fisher and Geduldt will push those two all the way. Fisher weighs in at 100kg or so & Geduldt isn't huge but gangly and was amazing in the u19 Currie Cup. Fisher (13) was the leading try scorer while Geduldt (12) was 2nd.

We know about Pollard but he won't have it easy as he did last year with Sharks u19 captain Robert Du Preez around and WP u21 star Swiel versatile.

The scrum-half positions will be interesting. Percy Williams was the SA Schools scrummie and highly rated. Made the move from SWD to the Lions. Hanco Venter was often starting for Sharks u21's and Stefan Ungerer is often used as the sub scrummie who makes a huge impact.

The only loose forward I know anything about is the Bulls u19 captain and 8th man in Ruan Steenkamp. Roelof Smit & Albertus Smit are mainly 6's.

The locks are dominated by the Bulls. All have huge potential by all accounts with Jacques Du Plessis the standout. Hopefully used as a lock and not a loose forward where he was used for Bulls u19s.

Reckon the loose-head will be Justin Forwood, and the tight-head will be between Coetzee, Beerwinkel & Fouche.

Hooker should be WP u19 captain, Freddie Kirsten, who lead his side to the u19 Currie Cup.

WPXV

Thanks for the info - it really helps a lot.    I am going to watch out for the players mentioned and hope you are correct about the talent pool.

Thanks WPXV.

Wonder how snapster feels about the squad. Seems like they are getting in some decent preparation. Dawie Theron is proving t obe a decent coach.

Mike I have no influnece with ED maybe he will see your post and try and see what he can do but I doubt Supersort  will do anything.

No problem guys.

We've got to remember that the bunch of last year played at home so had that benefit. I personally think this lot can be better especially with depth in certain areas. Considering players like Serfontein & Pollard are a year older a their games should have grown. I also think this preparation so far has been the most consistent as opposed to the last two.

I thought last year we were poor at full-back. Swiel & Kolbe should sort that out.

Like last year the depth at centre looks strong. We may see Fisher play as one of the wingers especially if Swanepoel can prove his fitness. To me Fisher & Geduldt were the two best players in u19 Currie Cup so that shows you the strength at centre. I reckon Luther Obi is a name to watch for wing and could be the new Rhule as family from another African country originally.

I thought our scrummie's were very average most of the time last year as well. Think we will improve there.

I don't think this squad will lose much in the scrum either. Our locks were very good last year but lock Jacques Du Plessis is already in the enlarged training squad with the Bulls seniors. The only other forward training with a super rugby squad is lock Marvin Orie who was part of the squad last year and his very good in the line-outs and open play adn played for the Bulls u21's and Vodacom Cup side.

This years side looks as good as last years

I know Swiel is a class act but should be playing 10 as he is only 80kg, but man can this kid play, what a step on him. Played most his schoolboy rugby as a 10. I'd play Pollard at 15

I dont know the wings.

The centres are sorted and probably even better than last years in that Jan Serfontein returns with his outside centre partner Dries Swanepoel 98kg, who would have been in last years squad had he not been injured. Serfontein and Swanepoel are best mates, played for Gey Bloem and SA Schools together and were both snapped up by the Bulls last year.

The one to watch is Tyler Fisher (100+kg) of the Sharks, big muscle bound lad with skills who has a hell of a try scoring record as a 13. One of Swanepoel or Fisher will have to play on the wing as both have to start.

We have Pollard at 10

In the forwards the big Bulls dominate, with Jacques du Plessis being the real deal at 2.01m and 118kg, is skilful enough to play 7 where he has played most of last season as the Bulls have so many locks, all 4 in this squad being Bulls. du Plessis was the star of the SA Schools side and he to was snapped up by the Bulls, I think he played for the Pumas at school. Rugby nearly lost him as he was a top javelin thrower and nearly took that up instead. The other two lumps are Irne Herbst 1.98m 118kg and Dennis Visser 1.98m 118kg.

Amongst the props they have some big units three of them being Bulls - Justin Forward 122kg, Beerwinkel 115kg, Fouche 117kg, de Bruin 118kg and Devon Martinus 122kg (incorrectly listed as a hooker above).

So all in all the side looks good and has class at 15, 13, 12, 10, 4 & 5 and have lumps at prop. I dont know the loosies, 9 or wings

A girl and WPXV

You really have provided some really top information on the guys involved in the Under 20 squad - and it indeed a great omfort that you think that the team are on par with the one last year.

I am not particularly impressed by size - I believe that size and ball sense should be combined to produce good backline players..   In any event if you have not done so - Google Timo Swiel and you will find a U-tube presentation on his performances so far.   He really is a ball sense and skills wiz kid and he is going to go places in his future career.   I am not sure who would be the better initiator of flowing backline play - I think Swiel may be btter than Pollard in that regard

Swiel is a special player but that was at school level where size did not count. At 80kg he is too small for 15 and should therefore play 10. He is pure class

A girl

This is where I have a problem - Swiel and Pollard basically played in the same games at school level - yet Swiel was the better player on that level.  Pollard had the advantage to play in the Under 20WC - but Swiel could have played in that competition but for an injury.

I think Swiel would develop physically that could bring him into contention on higher level,  Incidentally Swiel played for WP in the Under 21 final this year ahead of Pollard.

Did you watch that U-Tube on Swiel I referred to?

Yes saw that Youtube footage a while back. Swiel is better than Pollard, the only thing that will stand in Swiels way is size unless he sticks to 10
