My call for 2013
January 01, 2013, 15:25:28

Steph du Toit to partner Etzebeth by end of the year. I said it of Etzebeth pre 2012, I'm saying it of Steph du Toit in 2013

Methinks you're scraping the barrel....I mean Elzebeth was a given based on his S15 performance. Are you that desperate for credit or are you claiming to be the rugby version of Nostradamus!?

It's just a question.

Denny

I am the one who made a call that Du Toit would really be tops in Super 15 this year and that he will end up as Etzebeth's lock partner.   Don't blame Saffx entirely for that one.   By the way to his credit [removed] after the JWC of 2011 predicted that Etzebeth will come through in 2012.

I still stick with my prediction as to Du Toit and am with him in this case.and support [removed] in this case.

As for the Baby Boks this year look out for Sharks outside centre Tyler Fisher and Bulls lock/loosie Jacques du Plessis.

Fisher is a muscle bound scoring machine and du Plessis at 2.01m and 118kg is skilled enough to have played most of 2012 as a 7, having played lock prior to this.

Serfontein and Fisher should make a hell of a centre combo for the Baby Boks

Just a pity that you and Mike called for the Poms to beat us....hey? But you see there isn't any merit in your Etzebeth call, you probably called for 10 other U21s to be playing for the Boks. You shoot a full clip at the target and then bray like a donkey if one bullet hits.

Well until Meyer gets the calls right and we start winning 85% of our tests my calls will be loud and clear - for our woeful record suggest that Meyer is getting his selections wrong unless of course 57% does it for you.

Of that Baby Bok side, I'd have been more than happy to see Kitshoff at 1 for the Boks when Beast got injured, seen Steph du Toit ahead of Jeandre Kruger at 5, seen Serfontein at 12 ahead of past it Jean and Rhule on the wing instead of Hougaard who belonged at 9

Mozart

The Poms buggered up badly and we were lucky to win by one point.   We were not actually that convincing winners.    We could have done much better if ww did not have dummies like Steenkamp and De Jongh in the mix.

Steph du Toit, Eben, Willemse... not to mention a few others bubbling under.

Im a bit worried about our depth at 9.

It isnt something we SAFFAS are accustomed to... i mean we have had 2 of the best scrummies in the world play for us over the past 17 years.

We usually have to worry about 10 and 15...

Yes I like the look of Willemse, big unit who likes to impose himself.

We are ok at 9 with experience in Pienaar, Hougaard to make a rightful return to 9 and we have some good youngsters coming through in Reinach, v/Zyl, Groom and Schrauder

Well until we lose more than 23% of our tests against the top teams in the world I'll stick with the coach. Who am I going to believe, two turncoats who picked the Poms to beat the Boks? I'll stick with the professionals.

Steph Du Toit is now a first choice at the Sharks.

Being a first choice at the Sharks, Bulls or Stormers is practically the short list for bok selection, or at least the extended camp of the intial training squad.

-

This is the [removed] call on the loose forwards below for 2013

  • Loosies: We have loosies to burn. Alberts and Louw will provide experience. Vermeulen looked comfortable at test level. Brussouw should always be part of the equation, as should Daniel. Meyer needs to invest in the quality youngster coming through like Kolisi, Elstadt, Carr, Arno Botha, Dewald Potgieter, Coetzee, v/Wyk, Rhodes, Kriel, Labascagne, Cook, Koster, Ardendorf, Whiteley and he needs to award Irish bound CJ Stander a cap so we can secure his services for the future.

The [removed] call  is 20 players as candidates as loose forwards for 2013.

Given their is only 3 loose forward positions available in the starting team, one more on the bench with a 5th in the extended squad it is not possibale for Meyer to invest in all of these players.

-

It is not Meyers job to invest in all of the players as he has to select a squad that is limited in size to represent South Africa.

It is these players responsibility to become 1st choice players for the SuperXV team and prove in this tournament that they are amongst the elite. Being elite is the top of all of youngsters and as good or better as the more established and proven in[removed]bents. Performances and supporting statistics must support they are the top performers. Otherwise it will become the Roedolf Straulie era where anyone and everyone gets a cap as a bok. The best thing Jake White did was establish a squad with experience

-

If you call all junior players, surely one of them is going to be right as this is the practically the whole pool of players to select from. That is just list creating a roster of all of the players in Under21 and young players in the SuperXV squads. Add next years new loose forwards along with the following year and this list will grow, or some of the outskirt players will have to be removed to make way.

-

Marcell Cotzee who does now appears to have fallen out of your favour finished the 2012 SuperXV with the best stats as a loose forward and earned his bok call up based on performance not just the potential of being young.

Players cant just make the team because they are young and therefore may have the potential. If this was the case then anyone over 27 years of age should just be retired

Sharkbok

You have to learn something about [removed] - he normally knows the youngr players cominginto the Under 20's quite well - but he has serious problems in really making longer term projections.   He is extremely loyal to the players he likes and can never see their deficiencies in real perspective.   Once he starts to punt players -they walk on water - irrespective of how many times they fail.

As to loosies he talks about - Kolisi started off well for the Stormers, but cooled off later in Super 15 and was realloy not up to the standard by the time he got injured.   He is unlikiely to make the starting line-up in Super 15 this year,   Brussouw had a very poor Super 15 in 2012 - injuries put pay to any sustained performances ad I do not think he will make it in future.   Daniel is a star - but too small for international rugby,

Of the younger loosies there are effectively only a few that will be candidates in future.   Aside of  Marcell Coetzee, there are Arno Botha, Elstadt, Stander  and Wiaan Liebenberg.  As you pointed out ultimately there will only be four players in contention   - so some of the youngsters will have years to wait before they come into contention.

"Meyer needs to invest in the quality youngster coming through like"

All [removed] is saying is that there is a brace of youngsters coming through . He gives examples. He does not say invest and play all of them!

I agree we have  a great blend of youth and experience and Meyer has to make it work.

As for Du Toit  I think he needs to prove himself at Super 15 level and impose himself. This is possibly a year too soon but we shall see. This year will probably see guys like Kitshoff, Malherbe, Coenie (If fit)Jordaan, Elstadt etc coming through. These guys have played a few seasons of Super 15 and are more likely to be ready.

Leave the under 21 guys out of the Bok mix is the general rule.

A couple of the very young players might get a chance. Eg Rhule and Du Toit etc
