Joost the best Bok scrumhalf of all time says Marshall
December 13, 2012, 08:40:55

Ex Rugby 365

Ex-All Black scrumhalf Justin Marshall regards former rival Joost van der Westhuizen as the greatest No.9 in Springbok history.

The legendary scrumhalves, along with Wallaby great George Gregan, were arch rivals for nearly a decade and considered the top three players in the position for the majority of that period.

The trio have formed a close bond since their playing days and Marshall and Gregan have been dedicated supporters of Van der Westhuizen as he battles motor neuron disease.

Marshall said the 1995 World Cup winner, who played in 89 Springbok Tests and scored 56 tries, is the best scrumhalf South Africa have ever produced.

"When he was on song he could flip a game and win it almost single-handedly,” Marshall told Fairfax News.

He was a magic player. One time I remember he made a break through the line, I was defending deeper, and I thought this was my chance to line him up and put him into a hospital ward.

“I launched myself, only for him to chip over my head, pirouette around me and score beside the posts."

Marshall said his respect and admiration for Van der Westhuizen has only increased since the Springbok legend was diagnosed with motor neuron disease last year.

"He's suffering, and it's really difficult to see the way he is now," he said.

"A degenerative disease like this is pretty awful. You get your head round that first, then do what you can to help out.

"You know he is going to die from it, and die sooner rather than later."

During his last visit to South Africa in February, Marshall watched in awe as Van der Westhuizen auctioned off precious memorabilia to raise funds for his J9 Foundation in aid of motor neuron disease sufferers.

"To see him giving up the things that meant the most to him to support the fight against motor neuron disease, it was a pretty overwhelming thing," said Marshall

This guy marshall is a top notch man and someone the kiwis should really treasure. Put him in charge of nz rugby and we will not have the BL type of problems.

As for Joost words cannot express how sad it is to hear ofhim him being in this state. Still hope for a miracle.

To me this whole situation with Joost has just proven what great guys Justin and George are. Supporting Joost in everything he tries these guys are really showing to be great rolemodels for young kids.

Also it just shows how great the game of rugby is, these three where great opponents in their time rugby and their competition has brought them together as friends.

Justin might be all praise for Joost, but that takes nothing away from both him and Geroge gregan's ability. I consider myself lucky to have seen the three of them compete.

Justin might be right Joost might be the greatest ever, however him and Georgie aren't far behind.

leave Joost alone Justin "with the sensitivity of a pebble"! He has more than enough on his plate right now to worry about trival things such as a debate about who is the best half back ever!

Dont think anything Marshall has done is amiss hAkwa. But I agree in the light of eternity what profit it a man if he gain the whole world and lose his soul. Even the misdeameanours of BL are as nothing!

All of these guys were outstanding....but Jooste had the little thing called speed.

Sorry to see his condition and how he must be suffering.

Sometimes I think medical assistance should be render on request from the sufferer.

Vasbyt Jooste.

Has Justin Marshall played against all the bok scrumhalfs in the last 100 year?

-Joost was a better scrummie than Justin Marshall.  It is interesting that he says the best Springbok scrumhalf of all time, not the best scrum half of all time. Is Marshall impltying that he himself is the best of all time?

Joost was  a brilliant scrumhalf but his pass was not his strongest point.

He usually swivelled when passing right so he could do long passes right handed on both sides.

In someways his play was similar to Francois Hougaard. An amazing rugby player that can play in allmost any position in the backline at world class level but not allways the best passer.

Joost also played many games for the Bulls on the wing as well.

Although perhaps not the strongest passer Joost was my favourite scrumhalf that I have seen since watching the boks. He has the x factor that could turn any game against any opposition on its head.

One of my all time favorite Bok players. Rated him far higher than Marshall but felt Gregan on his day was the slightly better player.  However agree that what made Joost so good was his ability to almost singlehandedly take control and turn a game. God Bless you Joost, and thanks for all the great rugby memories.
