Johannesburg – The Springboks will face their Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool B opponents, Scotland and Samoa in 2013, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) announced on Thursday.

The new tournament will feature double-header Test matches following a decision by the Executive Council (Exco) to overhaul the way Test matches were run in South Africa.

The new-look quadrangular tournament will be between the Springboks, their RWC 2015 opponents, Scotland and Samoa, as well as Italy.

The tournament – which will be played on a log basis over two rounds to determine finalists – will open at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on June 8.

Saru said fans would be able to watch two Test matches for the price of one while Test matches would, for the first time, be solely hosted by the mother body.

The decision was taken by the Exco after consulting the 14 member provinces.

The Exco also announced the Test schedule for the next three seasons, featuring Tests in Nelspruit for the first time.

However, Saru cautioned that all matches were subject to conclusion of commercial terms with planned hosting venues.

“Saru was the only major union in world rugby that didn't properly own its own Test matches,” Saru chief executive Jurie Roux said in a statement.

“The decision by the Exco now gives ownership to Saru.

“The key benefits will be in allowing us to plough a share of the profits back into all the provincial unions.”

Roux said the existing model had seen Saru effectively 'sell' Springbok Test matches to the major provinces.

The Test-hosting unions paid a rights fee and the amount of which was dependent on the stature of the opponent.

“This is a major change in how rugby is run and will present challenges,” Roux said.

“But the major effect is that it has placed Springbok Tests in the ownership of the mother body, for the benefit of all rugby's stakeholders.”

It seems that all teams are being hosted in South Africa. A bit like the WorldCup where all games are played in one location of the host country. Games are also going to be played on the same pitch on match day so spectators get to watch 2 games instead of one. Although watching Scotland vs Italy is not exactly mouth watering stuff it is better than going to a short one match game. Hopefully these will only be curtain raiser games.

It is good sometimes to get a tournament like this with some of the easier opposition, less pressure and more suited to testing and trying a more expansive game plan in the backs.

@sharkbok,

hats of to SA for including samoa in their tournament, samoa needs as good comp of sorts to help them continue to devlop, the talent they have in the UK is phenomenal, even if over half of them are NZ born, :oP

dont rule out a scotland vs azzuri game out either, their match in the 6nats this year was the battle for the wooden spoon & it was immense, really high intense rugby, but playing infront of their homecrowd would have played a large part in the teams lifitng their game, something they won have in SA.

the cons of having a tournament like this is u dont get the great 3 test series pressure of a match like u did with england this year, though maybe thats a blessing in disguise if the that 3rd test is anything to go by.
also theres the questions in wether its better to have tough matches before the IRC. All Blacks will square off against their greatest NH rivals ina 3 test series & the wallabies will be going toe to toe with british lions, so both teams will be well & trully tested in june.
given that SA have very poor player mangement (& selection policies), its prob good that they do have an easy test run, cos they will be thrown in the deepend of spXV straight away.

this will be a nice warmup for South Africa, Plus giving Samoa and Italy the respect they deserve woth some top class competition. I take it that Scotland will not be at peak form as they might lose one or two players to the Lions.

NZ and Aus have some tough competition before the RC. Anyone have any idea who Argentina will be facing in the June window?

@ ek,

according to this,,,
http://www.espnscrum.com/scrum/rugby/match/fixtures/international.html
the pumas first test of 2013 will be in the IRC, which is pretty ratshit. would be a nice opportunity for SANZAR to make up an spXV all stars team consisting of players not used in the june test series and let them help the pumas shake the cobwebs.
SANZAR really do need to do a lot more to help intergrate them into a legitmate powerhouse of rugby. though given the Boks worst ever results to them this yeat & the wallabies with enough on their plate, some might not be as keen as they should be with this idea, LMAO, :oP
in which case the NZ maori team arent playing at that time, so i would send them to play against the pumas, which would be a very even affair IMO.

but going by 2012, an all stras spXV team consisting of players not picked for their respective countries would be quite a mouth watering affair,,,
my all stars team,,,,
1 s taumalolo, chiefs
2 t liebenberg, stormers
3 wp nel, cheetahs
4 c clarke, chiefs
5 a bekker, stormers
6 a thomson, highlanders

8 l messam, chiefs
9 a ellis, crusaders
10 p grant, stormers
11 t nani williams, chiefs
12 r crotty, crusaders

Sasue

I agree with you about this issue - but am not sure that the authorities concerned would do what you suggested.   Most rugby development in Argentina was always supported by SA - with very little from the rest of the countries in the southern hemisphere.   Incidentally I also think the Springboks play more games against Samoa than either of the Wallabies and the All Blacks do.   Not very good on their part.   There should be more involvement on the part fo the Pacific Islanders in rugby development.

Insofar as your suggested team is concerned - I in the main share your viewpoints - but players like Messam and Bekker may be still involved in the tests - but it may be an opportunity for younger players to make their way up in the hierarchy.

By the way - the Bulls buggered up badly bty letting Stander go.   In his first game after leaving SA he scored three tries for his club - and in the second game broke a bone in his hand and is now out for three months.

Sasue, not good news, i agree they should get a few games in at least. I don't know if the all Stars team will be such a great choice. Maybe let them play the Maori team that should be good competition for them to get them ready for the RC. But a rusty Puma side will not be good for the competition.
