Israel Folau to play Investec Super Rugby in 2013

The 23-year-old, who cut ties last month with AFL club Greater Western Sydney, has joined the NSW Waratahs on a one-year contract.

ARU Acting CEO Matt Carroll said Folau’s presence in the Waratahs squad in 2013 would provide an exciting addition to the Super Rugby landscape.

“ARU has supported the Waratahs in their recruitment of a player whose profile and natural athleticism has the potential to deliver a further X-factor to the Waratahs next year,” Mr Carroll said.

“Depending on his development as a Rugby player, there is an opportunity for Folau to achieve higher honours, in Sevens as well as the 15-a-side game.

“Sevens is now an Olympic sport and we are keen to build depth and profile for the game in the lead-up to Rio in 2016.”

Renowned for his prolific try-scoring record in rugby league, and his ability under the high ball, Folau becomes the first player of the modern era to play three codes of football domestically in Australia.

Folau spent two seasons with the Greater Western Sydney Giants after a celebrated rugby league career with the Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos.

He set a new record for most tries by a debutant – 21 – in his first season with the Storm and also became the youngest player to represent the Australian rugby league team, at just 18 years and 194 days.

back when SBW signed with the NZRU i posted on then called rucking flanker that SBW will be a huge asset for NZ rugby, we have all seen the leaps and strides hes made since then and the relief from the Boks and many other nations were not lost on the AB fans, cos he is a true superstar of the game.

but now theres another new league convert plying his trade in rugby union and his name is israel folau. for all those who dont know much about league, he is a massive talent, fast and strong with amazing agility for one so big.

he has been trying his hand at AFL where he failed, but was paid a nice 1 million+ per season. the thing is the stuf he would have picked up in the AFL a very pro kicking game, is real good skills under the highball, he will be fitter then ever before as thers more cardio and speed related wotk in AFL then league and union and of course a nice kicking game.

i hope he dosent turn out to be another timana tahu a league superstar who failed big time when he swithced from league to union, but now there is a legitimate reason to watch one of the most borring clubs on the planet the warratahs.

Well,SOuth Africa's stubborn blind-eye approach to rugby league means we won't ever have converts in the Bok team

lets be fair south africa does not really have this type of talent in league. nice post sasu i will have a look at him when he plays for NSW. they are as dynamic as sand on a beach but maybe they can ditch the rubbish playiing pattern and start playing more modern rugby

the latest quade, no way hosea, lolz. quade is the most toxic thing to happen to australian rugby, losing him will only be good for the australian game.

in league he played on the wing with the one apperance in the centers that i can remember. not sure what they will do with him at the waratahs, but IMO they should play him on the wing again. playing center in union might be a bit much for him, especially with all the defensive decisions one has to make there. but if he does succeed, a move to the centers would be pretty awesome.

u should utube him up and see some of his games in league to see why theres such a big fuss being made over him in australia, he exploded onto the scene and then played state of origin NSW vs QLD which IMO is the highest level of league out there, even higher then internationals.

he wasnt even 21 and had already won everything u could in league during the 3 years he played, NRL grand final, state of origin and in international sereis.

but my biggest concern is that he might fail the way that timana tahu did if u can remember him, but if he succeeds like tiquiri, matt rogers or wendall sailor, look out NZ & SA.

Why has league not taken a foothold in SA?  You have players that are suited physically to the game. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Ray Mordt have a stellar career in England playing league?  By the way don't know how he'll go in union but in league the guy Folau was a footballin' athletic freak.

Sasuke, agreed he looks phenominal.

Many of his tries he scores are from catching cross kicks. This is probably why he was offered a chance in AFL- his ariel skills are amazing.

All in all he is very strong on his feet, fast and skilled. I think he should start as a wing and then potentially move to outside center as he improves. I have no doubt on attack he will allready be a world standard quality wing. Just have to see how he is on defence positional play.

He is strong as an ox, he pulls over like 4 players from metres out to get over the tryline. I reckon he will do well in union
