Carter, Hansen, All Blacks named Player, Coach, Team of the Year

It is the second time the All Blacks star has won the award, the 30-year-old having received the honour back in 2005 and therefore becomes the only player other than his captain Richie McCaw to have received the prestigious Award more than once.

Carter edged out McCaw, England fly half Owen Farrell and France fly half Frédéric Michalak for the Award in one of the most closely fought battles in a year of high-calibre performances on the international stage.

The accolade completes a hat-trick of awards for New Zealand, as the All Blacks were named IRB Team of the Year for the sixth time and Steve Hansen the IRB Coach of the Year at the Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool Allocation Draw in London on Monday.

Carter, the leading point scorer in Test Rugby with 1,385 in his 94 appearances to date, has bounced back in great style from the disappointment of missing the majority of the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup-winning campaign through a groin injury.

His calm authority and all-round mastery of the skills required to play in the playmaker position have enabled New Zealand to maintain the feel-good factor derived from ending a 24-year wait to lift the Webb Ellis Cup for a second time.

Last month New Zealand celebrated their third anniversary as the number one team in the IRB World Rankings, playing an up-tempo brand of Rugby that was not only pleasing on the eye but extremely successful.

After an eight-year apprenticeship as Graham Henry’s assistant, Hansen has seamlessly stepped up to the role of head coach and arguably taken the All Blacks on to even greater heights.

Under his command New Zealand were unbeaten in the calendar year until a 38-21 loss to England at Twickenham on Saturday, a result which brought to an end their 20-match unbeaten run. In this time the All Blacks claimed the Bledisloe Cup for the 10th consecutive year on their way to the inaugural Rugby Championship title.

IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset presented McCaw with the Team Award and the Players' Award on Carter's behalf, while IRB Vice Chairman Oregan Hoskins presented Hansen with the Coach Award.

“The prestigious IRB Player, Coach and Team of the Year Awards fittingly bring the curtain down on the international Rugby year and what a year it has been. Argentina's entry into The Rugby Championship, a return to traditional tours in June and an expanded Tier Two competition calendar in November,” said Lapasset.

“New Zealand have again been the stand out team of the year with their 20-match unbeaten run and thoroughly deserve the IRB Team of the Year Award along with Steve Hansen as IRB Coach of the Year for his feats in keeping a Rugby World Cup winning-team winning.”

“Dan Carter has bounced back from the disappointment of missing the majority of the World Cup through injury to show what a truly magnificent player he is and a wonderful ambassador for our sport. Winning this Award for the second time reflects his sheer talent and ability.”

The IRB Player of the Year Award is selected by the IRB Awards independent panel of judges, comprising former internationals with more than 500 Test caps between them.

Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga, Paul Wallace and convenor John Eales watched more than 100 hours of Test action, awarding points to the three players they thought stood out in each match.

congrats to carter, but McCaw was hard done by big time IMO, he has clearly been the standout player of 2012, but no doubt that the jusged have had a case of admiration turn envy turn jealousy which has followed McCaw all his life.
IMO carter has played some awsome games, but his match against eng was the worst game of his career, add to that he missed out on 4 tests through injury and one through non selection, while McCaw missed out on one game through non selection and it makes the judges call even more baffaling, but TBH ive seen worse.

still great news for NZ rugby, the top three awards are in NZs corner and thats always great to see, :o)

if IRB player of the year included spXV, then no doubt he would have deserved it more, but the No of tests he played in 2012 was the biggest factor.

still confused about carter over McCaw, but i shouldnt be too surprised, McCaw is the greatest rugby player ever and carter is the best 10 and back to ever grace the game.

Congratulations to the ABs....certainly a great year. Sasu I could buy McCaw's claim on the greatest ever.....but it's not a clear thing. Gareth Edwards, Frik du Preez, Colin Meeds, Serge Blanco and several others, have claims. McCaw has been a great warrior though, over a long period.....he probably deserves being called  the greatest of his era. The one little fly in that ointment is the rules flouting propensity, much admired by some.....but not by all.

Carter is a superb talent, but a long way from the greatest back....in my view.

@mozzie,

tru taht my bru, IMO hes the greatest of all time, though i have heard plenty of others more notable then myself say the same, like RWC winng coaches henry and white and even current Bok coach meyer.

i cant really comment on players i have never seen play like gareth edwards, but my dad did use to rave about him and he raved about david campese too. but when i watched some of campeses matches on our vast rugby video collection back home, i wasnt too impressed.
same goes with colin meads. the old NZ guard swear by him and McCaw for that matter, but i just wouldnt know as footage on his games are rare at best.

i beleiev carter is the best back ive ever seen and ive seen odriscoll at his prime who is the best 13 ever, but end of the day each to their own, :o)

i must admit the colin meads was something else. he was a freakish talent in his day. mccaw is one of the greatest of the modern area and will be remembered as such and i agree with moz on his views of carter. he is a super talent but the jury is still out on the greatest back of all time. in terms of playing era's carter is right up there in my view. he is the most rounded first 5/8 i have seen.

to me the real greats are those that influence games on there own almost and how they inspire those around them and for me that is where mccaw stands out from any other. carter is highly skillfull but i am not sure he has the same level of influence that mccaw has. the way how mccaw manages the ref and how he bends the laws to his style and gets away with it shows his level of talent. one of the premier opensiders in the world ever.

I think Habana should have been a contendor for player of the year, maybe also JP pieterson.

in 2009 Richie Mccaw should never have been given player of the year- they lost 3 consecutive games to the boks and Heinrish brussouw clearly outplayed him. Fourie Dupreez was also rated by many as the best rugby player in the world by many of the players like Australias scrum half.

Mozart, you ever see that Lions test in NZ 2nd test where Carter made his arrival as the world's best. He truly was superb in that game, unbelievable, and even the pommie comentators lauded him as the complete player. Best 1st five there has ever been. Sharkbok Can't remember Brussow outplaying McCaw, competing well but hardly outplaying, that is a long standing myth perpetuated by South Africans because he gave McCaw a run for his money. By the way where is the "great" Brussow now these days, McCaw seems to be going from strength to strength.

Moz the awards only startedi n 2001 so who knows how many titles other great players would have won. Also theaward often favpour the flash players. How come Bakkie is not there the best lock of this era. I see Burger and Woods - hard players there but who else?

Yes sharkbok Mcaaw was outplayed by brussouw as many at that time noted so no award for mcaaw in 2009. Mcaaaw wa sordianr ythi syear so why the nomination again one wonders. How much would he have achieved playing leggally is a huge issue when rating mccaaaaw.

Carter has been a great flyhalf and the best of the last decade. He can however get rattled as we have seen a number of times. Best ever? EG against England last Saturday.

The facts ar esimpl enz hav etemporarily usurped our number on espot due to appaling incompetence by our rugby admistrators nad political interference. As Eddie Jones has said - if we get our act together no one would touch us. We would then not be talking about oaks like carter and mccaaaaaw. They would have spent their careers getting thumped by the Boks!  - which is the inheritance all abs should be looking forward to. Hahahahahhahaha

eddie jones is under contract at japan so that plan will never happen.

@sharkbok yes mate old mccaw got blasted by brussouw on the dirt. to be fair i have never seen mccaw get so mauled in the openside role. which in my view really proved how majestic brussouw is can still be. deon fourie can also in my view perform a similiar role.

eddie jones also said the boks biggest problem is there game pattern and mindset. forward obsessed defence only will not give long term success
