The Vodacom Bulls on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Victor Matfield as their new Forwards and Attack Coach for the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season, while also naming Derick Hougaard as a skills and kicking coach and Handrè Pollard as part of their extended playing squad for the new season.

Former Vodacom Bulls captain Matfield was promoted from a consulting role into a permanent position, former Springbok pivot Hougaard comes into the Vodacom Blue Bulls coaching structures for the first time and school boy star Pollard will be amongst the 53 players that will prepare for the 2013 season.

The Bulls also announced numerous promotions amongst their coaching squad, confirming the return of Japan-based Wynand Olivier and the inclusion of two loan players.

The squad will include:

•Two MTN Lions players, Lionel Mapoe and Callie Visagie, on loan

•New signings Grant Hattingh and Paul Willemse, who played Super Rugby for the MTN Lions in 2012 and Marcel van der Merwe (Toyota Cheetahs) (BAD FOR THE CHEETAHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

19 Springboks on the roster, including Wynand Olivier, who will return from Japan

IRB JWC-winning Junior Springboks Wiaan Liebenberg, Shaun Adendorff, Marvin Orie, William Small-Smith and Jan Serfontein, alongside Pollard and four other schoolboy stars.

Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke also confirmed his new coaching assistants, which saw the promotion of various coaches from within the Bulls structures.

Vodacom Blue Bulls Currie Cup head coach, Pine Pienaar, will be the new defense coach, while Andrè Volsteedt has been promoted as Head of Strength and Conditioning.

Nollis Marais, who coached the Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21’s to a second consecutive Absa Provincial Championship title in 2012 and won the Varsity Cup with Tukkies earlier this year, has been promoted to Vodacom Cup Head Coach and will continue with the Under-21’s and Tuks in 2013.

Xander Janse van Rensburg will be the new High Performance Manager, with numerous other appointments in the junior structures confirmed, amongst them Hougaard as junior kicking and skills consultant.

Ludeke expressed his excitement ahead of the new season.

Experience has taught us that the hard work in pre-season is vital for a successful campaign. We could only measure the effects on the prolonged 2012 Super Rugby season now and will adjust our planning and training schedules accordingly. I am excited to work with the coaches in their new roles and believe we have the right mix of personalities, skills and expertise to make 2013 a success,” Ludeke said.

Someone like Victor has so much experience to give back to our players and I am very excited to work with one of the sharpest rugby minds in the business.” (Best con artist in the business!!!!!)

Ludeke confirmed the return of Wynand Olivier, one of only two centurions in the squad (Mornè Steyn the other).

“He will join us as soon as his club commitments end in Japan. His record at the Vodacom Bulls speaks volumes and Wynand will be an important player for us next year.”

I am a big Bulle fan, and can understand Vic as forwards coach, but as attacking coach??? Mmmm not so sure.

Also where the hell is Lionel Cronje?? Can't believe they chose Fouche over him. First we ruined Sadie's career and now Cronje's.

Glad to See Rohan Janse van Rensburg there a laatjie for the future

If Hougaard is 29 why is he retired? Does he no longer play rugby?

Derick Hougaard has been plagued by injuries, and probably decided to call it a day.

Don't worry - Mattfield was a frustrated backline player that had a tassk to jump in line outs and be a lock in scrummaging.   Otherwise he was always moonlighting amongst the centers and trying to look good in open play - in the process hampering backline play.

Effectively it is a norm that Mattfield will inist on in future - so we will see Spies and the loosies loitering around amongst the centers killing the backline.   Watch out for that joke in the 2013 Super series.

its a sad state mike......i dont really know what to say about such appointments. seems like there is still a bit a buddy buddy system of appointments going on but at least the rest of the unions dont have to worry about the bulls. just match up in front dont give away penalties and you have pretty much 80% on your way in beating them.

Muncher and Mike thisis a very good squad. I maybe wrong but I thought Isaw on my tavels that Lions prop JC van Rensburg will also be joining them. Name me one area where they have player weaknesses.

As to ou matfield he was a slim oak for sure and clever enough to fool many a rugby fan as to his ability as a lock - when in fact he was very poor. Maybe he has real potential as an attack coach - being versed in the arts of deception!

We shall see  but I am expecting the bulle to do well - top 6 finish is minimum.  I just wish Marcell had stayed at the Cheetahs. We want the Cheetahs in the top 8 if at all possible.

The Bulls will have Victor Matfield for an attacking coach. Can it be any worse than having Fleckie and calling  him a back-line coach, or even just calling him a coach? LOL

Beeno

There were some really serious problems in the Bulls team - basically in respect of their "card boatd" props and problematic backline.   The latter was not for nothing called "the graveyard of backline players".

Their problem started with Hougaard - he went bad because of poor backline coaching and deficient playing and strategy development.  Then unto Morne Steyn - we all kmnow what to expect from him.   And Wynand Olivier is back so kicking and crashballing is the name of the game.

The new coaching set-up does not inspire confidence - and I would b surprised if the Bulls get anywhere near enough to be involved in the play-offs - probably below 10 on the log.
