Lack of performance, not result, hurt All Blacks in Brisbane

James Mortimer - (6/11/2012)

All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu has joined what has become something of a chorus from the team, saying that the 18-18 draw with the Wallabies was a disappointing result where the blame needed to fall at the feet of the World Champions.

The party line is that the All Blacks didn’t put enough out on the field at Suncorp Stadium, while the side has been shown on [removed]ysis that despite a less than ideal performance – they had numerous opportunities to put the Wallabies away.

Some will tell you that taking such opportunities is the difference between the best and the rest.

The most capped All Blacks rake said breaking down that performance was a large part of their planning ahead of their first Air New Zealand European Tour test against Scotland this weekend.

“We walked away from the game (against the Wallabies) feeling disappointed that we didn't play well,” Mealamu said.

“We left some great opportunities out there, so the last couple of days have been about looking at that last game and taking some key lessons out of that game.”

The Blues hooker said it was about the All Blacks recognising when they were in treacherous situations on the field, and reacting accordingly.

“If we get ourselves in that position again we won't fall over but arrive in a better state.”

Mealamu said that the All Blacks purpose was to continually improve, something they hadn’t done in Brisbane after remarkable results to close out and whitewash the Investec Rugby Championship.

“As a team, I think we are always trying to improve, and coming off our last game we want to make sure that we do the job well,” he said.

“Put the score aside, we want to make sure we put a good performance together. That is key for us this week. If we can do that, we'll be happy."

bull[removed], the result is what hurt the most, if we had of played ugly and still won, that would be a far better outcome IMO, so cmon All Blacks, save that mediocre excuse, bottomline u failed to get us that win and thats all that matters.

but live and learn and use that loss to the wallabies to put fire in ur belly and lets try and break that record again by punsihing all those who stand in the way of ur next 17 test matches.

GO ALL BLACKS!!!

well for me its shows where the mentality is of making sure they play to there full potential and the result will take care of itself.

to be fair 17 games on a trot is by no means a easy feat well done still the same......i cant quite beleive that other no name rugby country that has never been heard of still has the record for the most wins in a row......

I think the Boks are the ones that hurt the most because the Wallabies are the ones to manage a draw against the ABs instead of them! That looks like a good fishing spot in the background to where Mealamu is sitting :)

Greetings Hakwa!! I see you have returned to the fray!.

I was wondering the other day how the abs will go on tour. Naturally ab fans will be expecting a white wash but will that thappen. France will be bent on revenge after being robbed in the WC final.

Will the abs stand up to the English pack which I hear is doing well. It will be of interest to see how this average ab pack goes. They will hope that their backs can win it but as we saw in Dunedin and again against Oz the backline can be shut down. Will there be a further bursting of the bubble?

Hey has beanio,  how you bean? lol. France were robbed yeah? You missed an important lesson the abs learned from 2007. Be it by an inch or a mile it don’t matter a f%^k.... 3 more years beano get the f%^k over it!

Just like the rules at the breakdown at the moment beano, you don’t play to what is in the book because the book is a [removed]ing mess, you play to what the ref lets you get away with and if you ant figured that out yet then I don’t think you should be bok couch coach any more in my frank assessment beano.

Ah yes Dunedin... I have fond memories our pack needn't have bothered turning up that day, they weren’t needed. The AB's WON that game btw didn't they beano? and oh yes our backs may well win some games up north for us....You see beano backs tend to score 'Trys' which give you 'Points' and at the end of the game the team with the most 'points' wins (You might want to go tell meyer and the rest of the one eye's saffa [removed]s like you this) I truly thought you knew this already Beano but I can of course forgive you for forgetting what a 'Try' is....

We haven’t lost up north for a decade now, so does it really f$%ken matter? Losing a game this time round might actually make it f%^king interesting next year... Have we drawn against Argentina? Have we lost to Scotland (and I do mean ever)? .... Exactly! So get over yourself and your team Beano because neither of you are that f^&king good.

Was  allblacknblue actually sober when making this post. One has to wonder!

Certainly the cracks are showing in this abs side -  how much further will they widen one wonders.  Time will tell

Beeno, allblacknblue's post is accurate. But thought he would cotton on to fact that every post of yours regarding the AB's is geared towards baiting the Kiwi posters. It doesn't matter if the AB's smash all opposition and are heralded by the media, oposition players and coaches, Beeno will always find a way to attempt to rub kiwi's up the wrong way. Entertaining never the less.

Bean.....mmm lets see played 6..won 2 yea thats mmm thats great start for the Champion Rugby cup for the Boks. Over confidence is a curse you may learn one day maybe after the Irish put this new team to the sword. Cant help but feel SA rugby is like a blind deaf man stumbling around in the dark, wondering whats going on around him with the loss of all senses. LONG WAY TO GO BEAN ...but hey keep the dream alive brother.
