Meyer seeks 4 main qualities
November 06, 2012, 09:02:04

RYAN VREDE of keo, in Dublin, reports that Heyneke Meyer has outlined four key foundations on which he believes the success of his touring squad can be built.

Meyer has an arduous task ahead of him in the next three weeks, with a number of world-class players injured or unavailable due to contractual commitments to their respective clubs. However, he refused to discuss that as a potential obstacle to success and also rejected the suggestion that fatigue would undermine his cause. He said he was very clear in his directive to the players prior to the tour.

This has been physically the toughest season in history for South African players. But I really want guys who want to play for South Africa. Schalk Brits is a great example. When I phoned him [to inform him of his selection], he said he’d hold bags for three weeks just to be part of the set up. That is the type of mentality and character I want in this team. There’s no excuses. I understand player welfare is important, but when you put on that jersey everything must be geared towards winning,’ Meyer said.

‘Secondly, I also believe the guys must enjoy it. I love touring and as a young team there is an opportunity for them to bond and make memories. Thirdly, I want them to commit to excellence and have a massive work ethic. Its been a long season but they have to be thoroughly prepared. There are no excuses.

Finally I want to see which guys have what it takes to play away from home and in testing conditions. I don’t want to chop and change going forward. From the outset I wanted to use this season to establish who are the players I can rely on and this is the final hurdle for those who want to be involved.’

Two hands is insufficient to count the number of causalities Meyer has had to contend with in his bid to make the Springboks the dominant team he envisions, but he did point to advantages of the otherwise dire situation.

I don’t want to lose Test matches then point to rebuilding. I want to win every Test, but certainly I have benefited from the injuries in so much as we’ve built some depth by being forced to use youngsters. It’s a win-win situation going forward,’ he said.

A lot of the youngsters have taken their chance and they’ll be even better when more experienced players come back and we integrate them properly [i.e surround a select few with those experienced players]. [The injury situation] also forced me to look at some of the overseas-based players and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by what they’ve added.’

Meyer still feels short on quality in depth in certain positions, while on others, most notably in the backline, is desperate for more players with game breaking ability and who meet his requirements as far as size, skill, speed and power is concerned. (Oh the wisdom of meyer, wanting ALL of size, skill speed and power - why settle for LESS? Hahahahahahaha o umuncher just cant get it!!)

Particularly vexing to him is the shortage of No 5 locks, this worry trumped only by the absence of high quality tightheads to share Jannie du Plessis’ workload.

Jannie has been awesome, but I’m worried about who is next in line. A tighthead only gets to his best at 29 or 30, and most of the guys in that category are overseas,’ Meyer said before answering questions relating to speculation about Northampton’s Brian Mujati, whose call-up was blocked as a result of passport issues.

Brian is probably playing the best rugby of his career. He is well respected in the Premiership and when I’ve watched his games he has been unbelievable in the scrums (Ou snapster thinks Meyer is unaware of all this!!!). In the northern hemisphere every single scrum is a battle and they scrum for penalties, not just as a restart point. So you don’t just need an impact player to come on at prop for you, you need a guy who can put the opposition under pressure later in the game at scrum time. He has really impressed me in this department.’

So much good common sense and perspective from Meyer - its hard to fault him really. Fancy ou snapster thinking Meyer is clueless and calling for ou pdv who was in fact clueless as his hilarious and often embarrasing comments indicated!   Mike and snapster should simply bow to Meyers superior intellect and knowledge! Hahahahhahahahahahahahahaha

Now that is the right mentality!!!!! I don't care who you are or how talented you are, if you don't have that mentality then you do not belong in the bok squad, plain and simple. I would rather have a less talented player with the right mentality thatn a genius that hasn't bought in.

What should be noted is the age props are playing their best. 29/30.  I have high hopes for some of our youngsters like Kitshoff, Malherbe, Coenie,Marcell and so on. These guys are already doing well.

Looks like on playing ability Mujati is a must and if he can deal with any potential relational fall outs he should pursue this.

Motivation will be a huge factor. Witness the WP win against the sharks. Hope Schalk Brits is on the bench!

Juandre will be okay as he doesnt need to be too physical given how physical our loose trio is. I think Ireland are in for a hard time!!

selecting overseas based players sends the wrong signal to local based players and i feel that it encourages players to go overseas as there is not reason apart from playing for the boks keeping them in SA. If SA moves towards playing in the NH then offcourse that scenario changes completly as they will be part of the SA rugby system or at least in a competing part. the net result wil be a even bigger player drain as players will move overseas as they chase contracts and SA rugby at the end of the day will suffer the most.

in terms of louw not playing coetzee is not a open sider and we will once again struggle come breakdown time so i dont see us getting that front foot ball as we need.

Ek what is up with Louw is he injured?

I suspect these overseas players are being brought in because of their overseas experience, because they are x[erienced and we have a number of players injured. It may not happen again to to this extent.

I cannot comment on overseas players as I dont watch NH rugby. I am also watching the tennis! Man I do not want to become a couch potato!!  Then we have the cricket tests versus OZ!  Too much!

Louw picked up a neck injury in the last game for Bath. Last week it seems the Doctor said he was okay to go, but this week the signals are a bit unclear. So nothing subtantial yet, i hope he can play tough.

PS: just watch the Highlights Beeno :)

Beeno

I really like the following statemnt of Meyer - that is if he actually practice whah he preaches:-

"From the outset I wanted to use this season to establish who are the players I can rely on and this is the final hurdle for those who want to be involved."

Wonderful idea - but I do not believe that Meyer is applying it.   The failures in the squad remains his preferred choices and he apparently cannot realize that they are deficient even if it hit him on the chin.   Lets give a few examples:-

  *   He keeps on playing Kirchner that really showed near to zero this year on all levels he played at.   His alternative was Lambie - yet he gave him virutally no playing time

  *   He wants bigger and stronger players in the backline - yet he picks a player that has done ziich this year on all levels of rugby - but for one try scored in the CC Final.   A complete light weight with zero attacking ability

  *   He hangs onto De Villiers as if his life depends on it - whose performances this year were not up to standard.

  *   Morne Steyn failed badly in the latter stages of Super 15 and in the tests he played in - since but Meyer kept him in the team on the basis of  "I can coach his problems out of him".   It took a virtual disaster in Dunedin to get Meyer to change his mind about this player - but Meyer persists with him in the squad.

I can go on and quote a number of other players that Meyer persists with - I suppose on the vague premis "that I can coach their problems out of them.

If Meyer cannot find out who the players are he can rely on to perform and who are really the weakest of the weak than he indeed is a slow learner.   If the preset squad is really the basis for future development - we can expect a dim future in internatioal rugby.

The main quality we should be looking for is the will to win.....it dominates and subsumes the other 4 qualities.

Lambie has it, Habana has it , Bismarck has it, Etzebeth seems to have it, Hougaard used to have it, Spies never had it

meyer is sifting and some palyer sar ebeing mad eout to be disaters when all that has happened is tha twe were poorish in Argieland and had a bad test agains tNz in th ebackline as forwards began to tire due t ono rest.

Kirchner has been reasonable as many have pointed out and jean has been one of the better backs. Most of all th iswould no thav ehappened had Morne kicked a few kicks and we had won two tests down under and won the Championship. Then it would have beensaid wha ta grea tstart by meyer.

Look I think Lambie and Taute at 15 is an improvement.  I will dispair next year if things do not look up. Now is not the time to get too fussed. Jordaan etc will come into the mix as will kitshoff and malherbe etc. We should have a good squad next year reaching excellence in 2014. I do not want Meyer replaced as its far too early and there are mitigating factors. Its daft to only look at the scoreboard.

If not I will depart this world and nothing will console me. Hahahahahahahahaha

Just finished a long complex meeting and am off to the gym to clear my mind.  Listening to actuaries and investment gurus for a few hour can drive one insane!  Now you know why!
