Reinstate me as Lions coach says Mitchell
November 05, 2012, 13:10:15

Suspended Golden Lions coach John Mitchell has come out fighting to be reinstated as head coach of the Lions again, after he apparently was cleared of misconduct by an independent inquiry.

Mitchell’s management company, the Fordham Company, released a statement claiming Mitchell had been found not guilty of “various charges of misconduct levelled against him by the GLRU, with a further six charges having been withdrawn by the Johannesburg-based club.”

Mitchell was suspended by the Lions following claims by players of ill-treatment, while the Lions later added charges of bringing the union into disrepute over statements he made over their participation in the Super Rugby tournament.

But Mitchell said he had turned down an offer to join Sale Sharks in England, as he wants to be back with the Lions again.

"I want my head coach position back at the Lions," said Mitchell. "There is some unfinished business to do with the Lions. Furthermore, I am determined that my future will be in South Africa".

The lengthy enquiry into the charges laid against Mitchell by the GLRU was chaired by an independent legal expert, Mr Peter Bam.

But now Mitchell has upped the ante and instructed his lawyers to file a labour court injunction after the GLRU allegedly refused to release these details to Mitchell or his lawyers.

"Even though John has been cleared of these particular allegations, the GLRU, through its lawyers, is not prepared to release details to John or his lawyers," Mitchell's management, The Fordham Company, said on Monday.

"That's pretty amazing considering the damage that this action taken by the GLRU has done to John's reputation and brand. Furthermore, the GLRU's lawyers have advised John's lawyers that they are not prepared to release the findings and recommendations pertaining to the remaining nine charges brought against John unless John agrees to sign a confidentiality undertaking. One would have to question why this information is being withheld?”

Mitchell's lawyers, Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, are continuing to press for full disclosure from the GLRU law firm Erasmus Inc and have threatened an urgent application to the Labour Court to secure the findings and recommendations, the statement continued.

The Golden Lions released a statement saying the disciplinary hearing was concluded but did not give any indication of what the findings contained.

“The internal disciplinary hearing of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (“GLRU”) against John Mitchell has concluded,” Acting CEO Ruben Moggee said in a statement.

“In terms of the independent chairperson’s findings and recommendations, the GLRU will engage John in discussions which by the nature of the employment relationship are private and confidential and cannot be disclosed.

Further information will only be made available once the parties have met and agreed on a joint media release.”

Looks like Mitchell has been vindicated. Interesting that he wants to make  his country for working in. Cant think he would nt earn better at Sale?

I still maintain the Lions very, very unlucky th isseason with injuries messing up what could well have been a reasonable year with a Super 15 finish at between 10 and 8?

I am unsure why he wants to work at the Lions. He is far more professional than they are. They have some decent players, but the administration on the Lions is very amateur

Truth is...

I was really sad when i heard he was suspended.

I think J Strauss had a hell of a lot to do with it...

Now that JS has ducked, things may be a bit sweeter.

Look there is no doubting thatr Mitch is a tyrant and demands 150% every day of the week.

He also wants perfection all the time... which is never possible...

BUT in saying that... In my opinion, that is what the Lions need!

A father figure who will shake things up if you screw around.

I have no doubt that without him... guys like Taute, Jantjies and a few other lighties would have stepped out of line.

Having seen the Lions, Stormers and Cheetahs train over the past 2 years... from my humble vantage point, it also looks like his training regime is slightly more advanced than the "koppe stamp" SA coaches.

I vote for him!

As a Lions supporter, i say give him another go...

it seemed like they were slowly heading out of hell.

Agreed - Mitchell should be brought back. A tyrant he may be, however it what the Lions need.

We pay good money to watch the very poor performances dished out by the Lions year on year. They are just unacceptable and Mitchell more than anyone will not accept their mediocoraty. If all else fails at least we know that they have been pushed to the edge and back, some players over the edge!

I was prob JS's biggest fan...

But i'm not sure he did the right thing.

Things should have been sorted out behind closed doors.

Anyway... he's gone now.

Mitch would be welcomed back by the vast majority of the rugby public...

Along with King Carlos!

I think there are various issues to be taken into account here.   In the first instance for the first time in years the Lions under Michell's guidance won the CC.   They did not do well in the subsequent Super 15 series.

I think there are various problem areas that Mitchell could not overcome in his handling of the situtation.   Some key players was injured.   Ill-discipline by players costed them dearly - some players like Minnie churned out penalties like that was their main function on the field of play - and I also have an idea that Strauss as captain was part of the problem that emerged this year.

The Lions at times played very good rugby and despite some drawbacks - there backline performances were better than those of the Bulls and the Stormers.   In general I think that Mitchell and Spencer were because of their foreign backgrounds ostrasized by the ostriches in the Lions team and administration.   Thy wanted the Lions to up their game and bring in new ideas - the ostriches wanted nothing of the sort.

I think the whole process was a miscarriage of justice  and I hope the situation will be that the Lions are forced to re-instate them.   They still have much to offer and would probably get the Lions back into Super 15.

In the meantime we have to put up with the clueless in coaching - like Meyer and Coetzee.  I would definitely prefer Plumtree as a coach and proper coacching will take the Stormers to new heights.

i was always a big fan of both mitchel and strauss and like the record says, winning a CC aint nothing, especially given the way they won it, that was a classy stormers and sharks team they beat in the finals.

u cant ignore the fact that somethin similar happened to the westrn force, but i also agree that tough love might have been exactly what to DR ordered for the lions who have been super rugbys whipping boys.

i like many beleieve that injuries have been the main problem for the lions in 2012, had the lions and the blues for that matter been able to produse a near or full strength lineup for most of their games, it could have been a different story altogether and i cant help but think that injuries are why the lions are not in the spXV and not the cheetahs.

best to let sleeping dogs lie and just move on john mitchel, i dont believe u have the support of the board or the players , so u will be fighting an uphill battle from the very get go, but ur statements about demanding to be reinstated as lions coach wont be helping his chances at sale should he not be reinstated.
