Lambie to play Flyhalf for the year end tour
October 08, 2012, 21:44:03

Now that Goosen has injured his knee ligaments, he is either out for 6 months or 6 weeks pending the outcome if surgery is required.

The other 2 options are Earl Janjties and nnnooooooooooooo! Morne.

Lambie should have been playing at the start of the season.

As for Goosen, The guy is not built for Superxv or test match rugby yet. He needs a conditioning program to bulk up so that he can be more built to make tackles. The tackle he made on Sam Whitelock was technically sound and he did pull him down but he just does not have a combination of weight and power to stop him before the line. Incidently it appears he was not injured in this tackle, but right at the start of the game

When he got injured earlier in the year and damaged his shoulder it was when a chiefs player tackled him when making a tackle. It looked routine and I dont think a player like Jean Devilliers would have got injured. When Jean Devillier and Percy Montgomery started at international level they were also both to thin but later bulked up and this helped to prevent the injuries.

Goosen is our best flyhalf by far, and if he can overcome his injury problems I think he has the potential to be as good as Carter.

This is some of his moments

Yep he looks just like a young Gaffie, who was brilliant or perhaps the Quaalude. Both of those guys couldn't handle the pressure....so far Goosen has the same tendency.

Great flyhlaves are tough guys who don't wilt and make great decisions under pressure.

I am a great beiever in what you say as a rule and generally support your thinking on issues.   However, to make a deduction about Goosen based on 120 minutes play on test level about a player is neither fair nor reasonable.

I agree fully that Goosen needs to bulk up and am sure he will.   At least on Super level he showed that he has the talent - but not the physique as yet.

You are correct about great flyhalves though.   They need to have talent as well though.   That is where a flyhalf like Morne Steyn failed badly.   He was one-dimensional and made his dcisions way in advance.   Tough he may be - one-dimentional he defintely was.   He could never be trusted to make any real decisions under pressure - his decisions were taken before any real pressure was applied and they often lead to disaster..

We have had no flyhalf of any value since Honiball - at least there is some hope that Goosen will measure up eventually - there is nobody else on the horizon.

Sharkbok, Devilliers got injured in the first tackle he made in international rugby. That said, I do believe that Goosen needs to bulk up his upper body.

I have to agree, Lambie deserves his chance, but as with Jantjies he needs to work on certain aspects of his game. Id much Rather have Lambie in those wet conditions than Jantjies, but that said Id have these two before seeing Morne Steyn at 10 again.

Meyer is going to pick Morne, thats it.

@Rugby107- I remember the game, Devilliers actually got capped as an outside center against France. He was tiny compared to what he is now. He came back the next year more bulked up creatined out. Percy was also tiny and could barely tackle when he started.  Lambie could also get a bit more weight, although sometimes the creatine does not suit everyone, just ask Frans Steyn or that be the hamburgers

Either Lambie or Jantjies would be better than Steyn. Meyer should leave Morne at home and give him a chance to rest and work on his game. Use next years super 15 to select players on form  and merit and not because they are a bools player or use to be good. If he want to work with certain players then he needs to do it during the super 15, not in the Springbok team.

My only concern is that Lambie has been shifted around between 15 and 10 and really need to focus on one spot. For some reason, no SA player really wants to make the 15 jersey their own.

Frans Steyn is a perfect candidate but if you look what we have in SA, then we just don't have anybody standing up. Aplon, Joe Pietersen, Viljoen, Daniller etc. We really need to get some decent 9's and 15's

Donno if Lambie needs to get bigger, not the quickest bloke so he needs to watch out when bulking up the wrong way and he handles himself rather well when defending, so I dont think Lambie needs to get bigger.

Percy was really bad in his earlier years, he bulked up nicely when he played in Wales, came back a good tough player.

Lambie and Carter are exactly the same size

Bulking up will come with time, but Lambie should focus on Flyhalf. If this season is anything to go by where players have constant injuries then we need to build depth in key positions.

Goosen has been injured three times this season already. At this rate both lambie and Jantjies would get decent game time in the bok 10 jersey.
