Brodie Retallick issued an Off-Field Yellow Card

allblacks.com - (8/10/2012) - comments 24 Comments

In a media release from SANZAR it was announced that All Black Brodie Retallick has been issued with an off-field yellow card for his tackle on Andries Bekker.

The statement reads "Brodie Retallick of New Zealand has been issued with an off-field yellow card for contravening Law 10.4 (j) Lifting a Player from the ground and either dropping or driving that Player's head and/or upper body into the ground during the match at the weekend between South Africa and New Zealand in The Rugby Championship.

Retallick lifted South African player Andries Bekker in a tackle that resulted in Bekker hitting the ground with his upper body while his legs were still in the air. The incident occurred in the 20th minute of the match between South Africa and New Zealand played at FNB Stadium in Soweto on 6th October 2012.

An Off-Field Yellow Card may be issued by the SANZAR Citing Commissioner for foul play incidents that are very close to, but in his opinion do not meet the Red Card threshold for Citings.

In this case the incident was not acted on by the referee for the match: Alain Rolland and on further review of the match footage the Citing Commissioner deemed an Off-Field Yellow Card was appropriate.

@clevermike,

thought i would post this for u, lolz, :o)

a very soft outcome IMO, but while u might disagree, IMO it was a yellow card offence , but rugby karma has a way of balancing things out, cos daggs yellow started after JDVs run taute threw him the ball forward by 2 meters, WTF??? o_O

also does anyone know what an off field yellow is??? is retallick not allowed to train with the All Blacks for 10 mins??? or is it just a mark against his name???

Sasue

Sorry to disagree with you - a spear tackle is a spear tackle and a read card offence.   There is no question of intention here - it was an offence and should have been dealt with.   If intent is an issue here - it is similar to saying "I know I did murder him - I am so sorry about it - see the tears I am shedding".

Who was the citing commissioner in this case?   He should have his head read.  He covered up the issue wonderfully well.   Issueing of a yellow card has no standing whatsoever in the rulebook and meant nothing - no action at all.  In any event it is the first time ever that such an action was taken against a player and it obviously was a cover up to prevent a ban.

The issue of the Dagg yellow card followed an express warning by the referee to McCaw  because of continuous transgressions by the All Blacks in mayl situations and numerous penalties that was earlier in the game.   After that warning Dagg transgressed after the warning was given and he got the card - end of story. .

@clevermike,

nothing to apologise for bro, were all entitled to our opinions, but FYI heres the law and actual directives from the IRB,,,

Law 10.4(j) reads: Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play.

A directive was issued to all Unions and Match Officials emphasizing the IRB’s zero-tolerance stance towards dangerous tackles and reiterating the following instructions for referees:

The player is lifted and then forced or ‘speared’ into the ground (red card offence)

- The lifted player is dropped to the ground from a height with no regard to the player’s safety (red card offence)

For all other types of dangerous lifting tackles a yellow card or penalty may be considered sufficient

im not too sure who the citing cmmissoner was, but it had to be a  saffa as every union takes care of the transgressions commited in their backyard, but i could be wrong,,,,

Thanks for your input - however I still think it was a red card offence.  LOL

So another yellow. abs should therefore have had two yellows as well as all the numerous penalties that were awarded. One has to feel for Alain. He penalised the abs on numerous occassions due to their disregard for the law but missed a number of other instances. It gets embarassing for a ref to be penalising one side all the time and they back off a bit. (Of course if it had it been a bent down under ref officiating we would not have got even the penalties we did and would have had a host of penaties against us as we have seen so many times.)

All this showed the scant regard the abs hav for the rules of the game.

poor ben10, so frustrated cos the Boks arent delivering on his many many many loud mouth predictions, hope u enjoyed the rise to No2, all 7 days of it, lolz, :P

JDV passes the ball forward to haban, Boks score their ONE and only try. 3rd one by my count at that the time.
taute passes the ball two meters forward to JDV out on the wing where the subsquent breakdown results in a yellow to dagg.

Boks had plenty going their way and the ref was firmly on their side, but still the calibre and quality of the All Blacks was too great for the 16 Boks on the field, home advantage, massive crowd support and the travel factor, only the All Blacks could have done that, hence the proud uchiha cries of,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

GO THE MIGHTY MIGHTY ALL BLACKS!!!

 An off field yellow means Retallick has to start the next Test he plays in 10 minutes early!

SaSUE dont make a virtue out of your very bad discipline and poor play. The ref was lenient on you and clearly missed a red card and other infringements. boks were far more discplined and played to the spirit  of the game.

Greyling gave ou macaaaw a slight nudge but  nz have been bleating ever since. Harden up boys - wee mcaaw's was unmarked. A spear tackle is far more dangerous.
