The way forward for the Springboks
October 07, 2012, 09:52:43

In essence I think that insofar as the forwards are concerned there is very little corrective action necessary.   The core issue is that they did make a major contribution in the test against the Wallabies and also the All Blavks last night.   It was basiccally in pasr tests unthinkable to even consider the Springboks to have the majority of possession and territory in a test.    Maybe the reason for that was the fact that whayever possession the Springboks had in the past was kicked away and handed over to the opposisiton by Morne Steyn.   In fact that remained the major problem - we in the past was starved of possession, which in the last two tests were basically corrected.

I think that there are two corrections that will be made before the tests next year.   The one will be the return of Bismarck Du Plessis at hooker - the other one is less obvious and relates to Flip van der Merwe.   In both cases where he came off the bench against the Wallabies and he All Blacks - the opposition won the first lineout frpm our throw in.   My contention is that I would rather see that Elstadt be on the ebnch for the Springboks than Van der Merwe.

Insofar as the backline is concerned in general I think a total rethink is necessary.   I think that there is really a need to replace Kirchner as full back.   I would certainly like to see Willie le Roux becoming involved.   Matter of fact I would like to see Lambie at full back - with Le Roux as cover for him.

Ar the wing I would say that Habana and Pietersen remains the first choice wings.   My cover would be Rhule and Jordaan.   If a substitution is necessary at center - Jordaan can cover that or they can move Pietersen to center and bring in Rhule on the wing.

Insofar as the center position is concerned - there are a number of considerations affecting the shorter  and longer term selections.   In the longer term we all realize that De Villiers and De Jongh are not investments at all.   There are serious question marks as to Francois Steyn as well.   I think that Meyer will not discard Taute in the EOYT.   He does not have much other options at this stage in any event.   The Super 15 series next year will indicate the way forward.   It will show whether Francois Steyn is the answer - whether Taute has a future as a center (for that reason in his own career interest he should take the decision to go to the Stormers where he can receive decent backline defensive coaching).

Goosen remains the best option ar flyhalf - and the return of Morne would be diabolical.   Back him up with Lambie.

We have a dearth of scrummies and the only available option remains to be Pienaar.   Mist people will shout Hougaard - but he failed as a scrummie and now also as a wing..
