AllBlacks team named to play Boks

allblacks.com - (4/10/2012) - comments 26 Comments

The All Blacks team to play South Africa in the Investec Rugby Championship match at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, on Saturday 6 October has been named.

The team is as follows (with Test caps in brackets):

Starting XV:

1. Tony Woodcock (90)
2. Andrew Hore (70)
3. Owen Franks (39)
4. Brodie Retallick (8)
5. Samuel Whitelock (33)
6. Liam Messam (15)
7. Richie McCaw - captain (111)
8. Kieran Read (43)
9. Aaron Smith (8)
10. Daniel Carter (90)
11. Hosea Gear (11)
12. Ma'a Nonu (71)
13. Conrad Smith (61)
14. Cory Jane (36)
15. Israel Dagg (20)

Reserves:

16. Keven Mealamu (98)
17. Ben Franks (20)
18. Luke Romano (6)
19. Adam Thomson (27)
20. Piri Weepu (64)
21. Aaron Cruden (16)
22. Tamati Ellison (2)

The team features only two changes from the starting XV that started against Argentina in Buenos Aires - wing Hosea Gear and lock Brodie Retallick come in for Julian Savea and Luke Romano respectively, with Romano on the bench. Other changes to the bench are prop Ben Franks, loose forward Adam Thomson and outside back Tamati Ellison, who replace Charlie Faumuina, Sam Cane and Ben Smith respectively.

All Blacks Head Coach Steve Hansen said: "We are in no doubt how big the challenge is for the team this weekend but it is one we are looking forward to as it will be a real test of our resolve and character."

"South Africa are coming off a big win against Australia and will be playing in front of their home crowd at Soweto so it's going to be a huge Test match," he added.

Interesting facts
• The All Blacks have played the Springboks in 84 Tests since 1921, with 47 victories to the All Blacks, 34 to South Africa and three draws. The All Blacks last played South Africa in Dunedin three weeks ago, winning 21-11. The last Test in South Africa was in Port Elizabeth last year, with South Africa winning 18-5. The All Blacks played at FNB Stadium in 2010, winning 29-22.
• Owen Franks will play his 40th Test, while Piri Weepu looks set to make his 65th Test appearance off the bench.
• The All Blacks squad currently has six of the most capped All Blacks in history by position: Tony Woodcock (prop), Keven Mealamu (hooker), Richie McCaw (flanker), Daniel Carter (first five-eighth), Ma'a Nonu (second five-eighth) and Conrad Smith (centre).

Yes please...two good teams selected..I wonder why Hansen prefers hore to Mealamu against the boks?? Gear is a much better option than savea too...excitement begins!!

Sasu

Thanks for the info.   Just one question - is Retallick to your mind better than Romanp?   I rate both of them as average in international level - and we may differ sharply on that one.   The mere presence of Carter is a major benefit to the All Blacks.

Your chief assistant Geyling is out - are you by any chance disappointed by that?:)

I still think the Springboks are going to win - especially bearing in mind the improvements they made to their team.

im not too convinced about the gear over savea switch, IMO the form and workrate that savea was producing should have seen him get picked ahead of gear, but workrate is the main reason.
i will say big ups to hansen though for showing gear the faith to roll on and make the most of this opportunity, and im sure gear is under no illusion that theres only so many chances he will get, so its up to him to go out and start making some ground on savea on the performance level.
i do think that savea over gear is not what the Boks expected, and that is and advantage of sorts, i think its suicide for any team to want to peper the All blacks with high balls, i mean these guys learnt their lesson in 2009 when the Boks perfect kicking game found holes in our defence, but we have mick byrnes the AFL ace up our sleeve and high ball and kicks are their bread and butter, so all good on that front.

i like seeing ben franks back on the bench, the charlie enduced rest hes had over the last month will see him raring to go and thats great considering the super sub that the Boks have in coonie on their bench, im also expecting woody to be subbed of and owen to play the whole 80 mins.

another major surprise is adam thomson on the bench, to me this signals an intent from the All Blacks to run the Boks ragged which might not be a bad idea, cos i rate the All Blacks fitness a lot higher then the Boks, but if the forwards who are starting dont man up and match the physicality the Boks are going to bring, then we could be in for a long day and IMO vito would have physically been more up to the challenge.

having romano on the bench also has me a little worried, cos we need our enforcer on the field to help roadblock that forward assult, but on the other hand we do have the two best lineout winners on opposition throw in the starting 15, but is that really a good exchange??? im guessing that hansen is expecting the Boks lineout to be a foundation of strong offensive plays like it always is.

big ups also on tamtai ellison on the bench, i would have thought ben smith would have locked that up too, but its great to see some of NZs other form players being rewarded on what is IMO the grandest stage of the all, playing the Boks in their backyard in front of 90,000+.

GO THE MIGHTY MIGHTY ALL BLACKS!!!

Savea was found wanting against the Irish when they kicked onto him and boks possess a better kicking game. ab's could have considered Ben smith. In terms of locks, Sam whitelock could have made way for Romano. He would probably have done better when the game gets looser. It's gonna be a massive battle upfront early on as always so you probably want your most physical locks on then.

having said that though, the players that have been selected are all quality so may the best team on the day win!

@clevermike,

i rate both retallick and romano very highly, but i would have started romano over retallick, simply because im expecting the Bok forwards to come out charging, but as i mentioned he might be there to make the Boks work for all their lineouts which is always very strong wiht Boks and saffa teams.
in NZ and myself included both retalllick and romano are rated very very highly, if u were to watch only them during the games, u will see the workrate that they produce and it is seriously impressive, always involved in the tight stuff, especially reallick, while romano brings more physical attributes.
i kind of like see ur opinon of retallick and romano, the way most kiwis see vermeulen, he is very underrated in NZ ciricles not by me of course, but i guess they dont see what he brings to the table.

connie for greyling is a big advantage for the Boks, but carter and aaron smith starting are even bigger advantages IMO and while the Boks have improved, the only win they got from their last 4 games was against a wallabies team that was playing blindfolded and on crutches, LMAO, :P
im still expecting an All Blacks victory, but only a 10pt victory now, Boks havent improved enough IMO and heaven forbid if the All Blacks improve as well, cos then the Boks are really up poo creek without a paddle, :P

@boklogic,
hore is in way better form then kev, especially based on the last few games, so his inclusion is very logical IMO.

and i agree on the ben smith could have started, but im happy with gear starting and its testemant to the All Blacks depth, but i would still prefer savea to start against the Boks.
its true that savea was left wanting in the second test all the way back in june but those were some shitty conditions and the All Blacks as a whole were all left wanting, the week before on his debut he was a menace on attack as a support player and on defnece.
the Boks kicking game didnt effect savea at all in dunedin, habana got a nice little chip on him, but other then that, and if the Boks do kick that ball away this sat, they better plant it deep into the stadiums, cos the All Blacks will take every opportunity to attack.
and u must not have watched savea play against in both puma tests either, in the horrible wellington conditions, he was a constant source of go froward for the All Blacks and when playing in great running conditions, he terroized the pumas with his hurricanes partner in crime jane.
savea is a future superstar of world rugby and is IMO easily the form 11 for the All Blacks at the moment.

Yeah sas, savea is very unlucky and he can feel hard done by. He must be gutted but I think it's testament to the amount of respect opposing teams have for habana. Maybe they feel savea might not cope in front of 90 thousand bok fans..who knows...maybe he is not 100%?

could it be that savea approached Hansen and asked to be dropped as he was having nightmares of this green wave coming at him ;-)

Sasue

I think that the All blacks locks are not comparable with the locks of the Soringboks,   I do not see how the All Blacks can up their game - as you said.   I doubt very much they can - de olde bones - de olde bones of most of the players are likely to creak in the match on Saturday.   LO:L

Joking aside - where other than on flyhalf and scrummie can the All Blacks up their game comparative to their display at Dunedin?   I think they are going to try attack through the channell - but since the Bok loosies outplayed those of the All Blacks in Dunedin - they are not going to succeed there.

I really was surprised by one thing about the Argentina game and that is how far back Carter was standing in the pocket - why would that be?   He did make two very good line breaks though - but that was more from broken play than from anything else.

Seriously now.   I agree also that Aaron Smith is an improvement - but anybody will be better than Weepu.

Insofar as the forwards is concerned - I think they selected Hore - because they think he would  better in the forward battle - but both are very average players IMO.

I give the All Blacks an edge in backline play - but it depend entirely on the quality ball they are going to get - and that is where the All Blacks will come short.   They are going to lose balls on own through in the line-outs and they are going to struggle in the mauls.

Insofar as the match itself is concerned - it may be mentioned that Goosen had a bruised  heel problem that affected his kicking at goal on Saturday - rhat is why they gave the goalkicking to Pienaar .   Goosen.s problem has cleared up and yesterday he was practising goal kicking again and past with flying colours.  The Al Black forwards better not do what they did in Dunedin and that is to give up penalties within kicking distance.   The penalties mainly was enforced.  It is - unlike in Dunedin - going to cost them dearly.   .

I don't think  the All Blacks can win other than if the Springboks did what they did in Dunedin and g`ive the game on a platter to them.   That is unlikely to happen.   You will need a lot of beer to drown your sorrows Sunday morning.   LOL
