Sharks are awesome..Do they have enough in the tank for 1 more??
July 29, 2012, 01:10:10

Sharks have no doubt been the most clinical team since the June test match window. I just pray the have enough in the tank for 1 more big effort and what an effort it will have to be. Would like to see a week or 2 break before final as it allows both teams to get over travel, little niggles and hopefully both be at full strength with players (Lambie, Jordaan) hopefully returning from injury so it makes for brilliant rugby. Mind you, the Sharks are on a roll as it is. Your thoughts?

Finals rugby anything can happen, though the odds are against them and we need to be very clear on this the odds are against them. The Sharks will turn uo no doubt what so ever.

Unlike the Stormers the issue I see is that you have to similiar teams in style of running play, hit up rugby, Good defence and x factor style presence. That in itself means that the game is either going to be played at a frenetic pace or at a level that the Stormers and Bulls like which is forwrad based and steady as she goes.

My concern is that if it is fenetic and I envisage that the Chiefs will go all out then I see the last 15 - 20 minutes being the most critical for the Sharks. If we can either match the Chiefs point for point or be 10 points plus in front then we will have to draw on every ounce of blood, sweat and tears to hold them out....we can do it!!!!

However, if we are chasing in the last 15 - 20 minutes against 10 points then it may be a very tuff task against what in my opinion has been the form team over the entire season....Remember they lost their last two games after what can only be the most pathetic TMO decisions particuarly the Hurricanes game.

Nonetheless, the Sharks have created their own destiny and what a destiny and a massive shot in the arm it would be to BOK rugby if they can pull it off.

GO THE SHARKS!!!!!

Although as a Shark supporter living near Durban I can state without a shaadow off doubt that the Sharks have the better all-round team - I do not think it is physically possible for the Sharks to beat the Chiefs in Hamilton.   The reason is that they within two weeks effectively had to  -

  *    travel to brisbane for the play-offs;

  *   travel from there to Durban and then to Cape Town for the semi; and

  *   travel from Cape Town to Durban and hence to Hamiton for the final.

If despite that they beat the Chiefs it will really show that the Chiefs team is not up to standard - which I sincerely do not believe is the case.   By Saturday the Sharks players from a time perspective will be totally disorientated and it would only be through a mirycle if they mkanage to pull this one off.

Obviously nobody in rugby circles will really admit that it is a problem - but it really is    In all honesty I would say that although my heart is with the Sharks in this one - my mind says the Chiefs will beat them under these impossible trasvelling cir[removed]stances.   Outside of that perspective and purely from a rugby point of view - the Sharks has a better all-round team than the Chiefs and under normal cir[removed]stances there would be no contest if the game was played under different cir[removed]stances.

Mike,

If I was a smart coach and I was facing a team that has had to cross many time zones the simple game plan would surely be to run the Sharks a hundred miles an hour and at a pace that wil drain them. I have no doubt they will go at hyper speed in the first half. I also agree that the Sharks man for man are a better team and have peaked when you need to peak.

However because they have been hot and cold over the season they are now in this situation where they have stacked the odds against themselves so I do differ against your view that the Chiefs are "not up to standard"...that makes no sense at all????

So thats why I have stated that the Chiefs have been the form team and not the Stormers, Crusaders or Sharks. And because we are playing them at Waikato Stadium then they rightfully hold the favourites card

Anyway as I stated earlier the Sharks have set their own destiny and have the skills, players, armour, attitude, belief to go and beat the Chiefs.

However, If we lose I for one will not be jumping on the bandwagon of blaming the travel for the Sharks not bringing back the trophy.......................

GO THE SHARKS!!!!

when i compared the teams man to man, i was surprised to see that the sharks do have an edge in that regard, but i still consider the chiefs to be a far better team and unquestionably a more consistent team.

the losses that the chiefs suffered in the last few rounds was more an indication of just how truly tough the NZ conference is, with the chiefs, crusaders, hurricanes and highlanders all beating each other once and all beating theb lues twice.

if travel wasnt an issue, IMHO chiefs would still beat the sharks like they did in rnd 9 when they beat the sharks and kept them tryless in their own backyard, despite the poor comditions and whats carzy about that match is that SBW had a poor game by his standards making far too many handaling errors, a problem i cant see this week.
on top of that, no matter who the sharks put at 10, crudens going to have the upper hand as he is the form 10 in the comp by more then a country mile. his attacking prowess is second to none at the moment, more attacking nous in cruden then the entire stormers squad for the last two years.

i feel bad for the sharks and their crazy travel schedule, but what the sharks are facing still pales in comparison to the travel demands of the crusaders last year who played every game away from christchurch. yet they also managed to the finals and was pipped by a reds outfit in brisbane reffed by [removed]inson who like lawrence was questionable and has been removed from reffing since.

but the point is, the travel be that as it may is really what it is and while the sharks are behind the 8 ball, IMO the chiefs would have beaten the sharks regardless of where, what  cir[removed]stances were involved and when they were playing, but cos of the big travel, the chiefs should smash them off the park. but i will take any win wether it be by 1pt or 30pts.

should the sharks win, it will be quite easily the best super rugby victory in super rugby history.

Sas,

Some fair points and as avid followers of our own national teams we will always be biased when it comes to the abilities and who are or which team we rate the best. Nonetheless I have tried my hardest to be as fair as possible and most of my posts I have focused on the game, the plays, the situation and cir[removed]stance rather than seeing it as a SA vs Kiwi.

The Sharks have been in the finals before and obviously havent converted yet. It is no doubt an extremely difficult task to go to New Zealand and beat a kiwi team at anytime let alone for a final. We get very emotive and passionate in SA with our Rugby and we like Kiwis are probaby very one eyed and cant see past our own noses lol......But thats why we love our rugby

Nonetheless, the Sharks will turn up and will give everything they can and the Chiefs will know that. After watching both semis I was intrigued by how the Chiefs played with real disdain against the Crusaders and played with a combination of anger, amazing skill and just brute force. The Sharks seem to have some great combinations working and a loose forward trio that is frightingley good.

Our backline is looking like it can compete with the x factor of Cruden, SBW, Robertson and Masaga. If the Chiefs forwards match the Sharks early then I think we may be in trouble. The other thing that will determine the outcome is the pace of the game as I believe the Chiefs are going to try run the Sharks from end to end to tire ourboys out.

Unlike what many think on here there really isnt a lot between these two teams even whar u man up theSharks may pip the Chiefs but that means nothing when iit comes  to trying to beat them? I believe the BOKs have always had the edge on the AB forward pack for years but the results suggest otherwise.

I have always admired NZ rugby as I think they always play smarter rugby than SA. They seem to have plan B when most SA teams dont and panic sets in when plan A goes wrong. However when our plan A is executed well it is extremely hard to stop.

We have an awsome matchup and the Chiefs fairly will go into the game as favourites....good luck Chiefs...but GO THE SHARKS!!!!

Sasuke, you are very wrong man. To make a statement like "the Chiefs will beat the Sharks no matter where, when or how" is just bullsh!t. The Sharks team attitude now compared to the one that played the Chiefs in the earlier rounds is 2 different things. Chiefs, if you are honest with yourself, are actually going back in form whilst Sharks are getting stronger. I dont want to mention travel as I want no excuses. Travel is gona take its toll on the boys but thats just what we are faced with and cant change that. I am not saying that the Sharks will beat the Chiefs at home this weekend although I really hope they do, I am merely saying your statement suggesting the Chiefs would beat the Sharks anywhere is not well thought out and seen through the eyes of a kiwi and not rugby supporter. Its also a fairly massive call to say Cruden is out and out the best 10. I reckon Michalak aint half that bad. Just google his stats and what he has achieved vs Cruden and the saying, "stats dont lie" will ring true. Cruden is a flash player yet to be too harshly tested in the big time (he always limps off injured and needs a good feed to bulk up) whereas Michalak loves the big time stuff.

Radtad

Read very carefully what I said.   I do not believe that the Chiefs are an average team - clearly said thaat in my comments.   I said that if they lose on Saturday - they would be regarded as such, since all the odds are stacked in their favour.

There are two other factors that bothers me about the issue and that is the way that some people say the game will be played.    The Reds tried the running tactic and came off second best - because of player mistakes.   The Sharks - despite the absence of Francois Steyn - has the players to capitilze on counter-attacks.   It can work but only if the defence is not up to standard - ff the Chiefs try that tactic it could be fatal for them.   I carefully watched all the Chiefs games this year - also the semi against the Crusaders - and came to the conclusion that handling errors could be a factor.

If the travel issue is not to be a factor - I would say that the Chiefs would have problems in the tight 5 - especially in the line-outs where they were clearly outplayed by the Crusaders.    A similar situatoion can be expected in the Sharks game.

I think it would be an interesting game on Saturday - but due to the jet lag factor I favour the Chiefs to win - but could be wrong as I was in the case of the Stormer-Sharks game.

By the way throughout Super 15 - while everyone was over-awed by the Crusader's reputation of the past - I always said that they are not going to make the final - the team as a whole has gone backwards over the past few years.   That is why they never really got into the position where they could win the cup in the Super series - they have not done so sibce 2008.   Under the cir[removed]stances I would not take too much notice of the Chiefs victory over the Crusaders - despite the performance of the latter team against the miserable Bulls.   Don't get me wrong - I think the Crusaders are still a good team - but not the top team they used to be.

so My team is out, and the sharks played well to get where they are. Getting behind them now to take it. But i have some real reservations. I will support them and hope for the best. I hope they can do it, this is a massive challenge. Travel is going to eat them bad.

It's going to be a mammoth task for the Sharks to win this weekend as we all know how the odds are stacked against them. It is, however, not impossible if the coach is exteremly smart with who he puts on the bench and how he uses the bench.

If I were Plum, I would do things very differently and would be thinking outside of the square. I would use most of my usual replacements in the first half and then bring the big guns on in the second half to make a massive impact and take the team over the line. I would target the second half and hopefully the boys just hold on in the first half. So, my 22 would look like this:

1. Beast

2. Burden   (Bissie at half time)

3. Herbst    (Jannie at half time)

4. Sykes    (Alberts on 50th minute)

5. Bresler

6. Keegan   (Jaques Botes at 65th minute)

7. Jean Deysel     (Coetzee at half time)

8. Kanko

9. McCloud

10. Freddie   (Lambie at 50th minute)

11. Mvovo

12. Whitehead

13. Jordaan

14. JP

15. Ludik  (Riaan Viljoen at 60th)

16. Bissie  17. Jannie  18. Alberts  19. Botes  20. Coetzee   21. Lambie   22. Viljoen

fair comment green but that amount of changes will disrupt the cohesion of the sharks and instead of having a team that is leading it might turn into a team that might be on the backfoot from the start and if the local crowd gets going things just might go downhill from there. i believe stick to the winning lineup from last week barring jordaan maybe and lambie coming in and try to score quickly and keep the board ticking over to silence the crowd and to get the tired bodies going. get stuck in until half time and access the progress and make replacements according to the situation. i dont think making wholesale changes will benefit them

Green, that is a very risky gamble. chasing the game when you have whole squad, including the players that have not played, that all have travel fatique is not a good idea. They will need to throw everything into the first 30 minutes. Score as mauch as they can and try and get in front. Chasing when you ae tired is not good.

one or 2 tries will take it for the sharks i feel but the chiefs unlike the limp stormers can score at will so they will be probing the whole 80 min's i do think the chiefs might be jittering from the last final the managed to play so i do fancy the sharks chances in this one. just hope they are mentally and physically up for it. just rest this week and keep the training light i think might get them through. plums knows what he is doing so just lets hope they do it on saterday
