Joe Pietersen in the mix

Ag no man...

Am I the only Saffa that doesnt rate him as an international 15???

Is Taute injured (my memory has failed me)?

Id much rather even see JP at 15. He has done well there in the past!

Stormers fullback Joe Pietersen has been called up to the Springbok squad in Port Elizabeth following the non-availability of a number of fullback options for Saturday’s third and final Castle Incoming Tour Test against England.

Pietersen will join the squad later on Monday as they prepare for Saturday’s Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Injuries to fullbacks Zane Kirchner (knee) and Pat Lambie (ankle) in the first two Tests, as well as Frans Steyn’s non-availability because he is getting married, has necessitated the call-up of Pietersen.

Pietersen, who had been struggling with a back injury, had been given the all clear by the Western Province medical team to join to Boks on Monday.

“Joe has always been part of our plans and also attended our final Planning Camp in Durban shortly before the England series started,” explained Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Injuries are part of the game and something you can’t plan for, but we always knew Frans was not going to be available for this Test. Joe knows our systems and game plans and I’m sure he will slot in easily.”

Lambie and Willem Alberts, who injured knee ligaments in the second Test, both underwent scans on Monday morning in Port Elizabeth. They have not yet been ruled out of the Test and a further decision on their availability will be made by Wednesday.

“We’ve decided not to call up a replacement for Willem as we have enough cover amongst the loose forwards in the squad,” said Meyer.

Chippo you might not Rate joe, understandably everyone has their favourites. and the size mad guys will clearly have issues with Joe but not Lambie. However sow me a safer fullback in the country please, as i don't know about one. i would also not complain about Taute at fullback as i like the kid there, unfortunately the powers that be have been playing him at centre. Joe won't start anyway. he will at most be on the bench as fullback cover as he hasn't had a game in a month due to injury. And the stormers defenitely missed his composure against the sharks and bulls.

I differ from you insofar as Joe Pretorius is concerned.   He did very well in Super 15 and in attack and defence he is better than Kirchner by a proverbial mile.  After last weeks performance by JP and the chance that they would rest Habana I would not change JP Pietersen and play him at full back or center.   It would neutralize his performance.

I wrote elesewhere that I think Steyn and Olivier  may neutralize the whole back line.   I think that Joe Pietersen would provide goal kicking cover for Steyn - who failed in that respect in the series so far.  if that happens again and he gives a poor performance again - he could in fact be replaced at flyhalf by Pienaar.

What they are going to do about Meisiekind remains a serious disruptive influence as well.   I suppose nothing at all.

So much for Heyneke avoiding the small guys.....they are all slowly but surely getting included. I must say though, on Saturday, the moment Alberts went off and Daniels came on, that side of the scrum battled. Simple really, when a guy like Alberts is pushing you from behind in the scrum, you are going to go forward...not so much with wee Daniels.
